    December 25, 2025 – Christmas

We have hd a lovely evening at a friend’s house yesterday and found out that none of us know how to play pool. let alone win a game. Today it’s Christmas albeit with a little less excitement than we had a few years ago. It’s all smooth sailing and our steaks for lunch are taking priority over gifts.

    November 25th, 2025 – Port of Hamburg

The port is actually a tourist attraction albeit also serving as a working port. Hamburg has always been an international city due to the many sailors who have passed through over the centuries. I am here for a private tour of the actual port, which is absolutely astonishing. You normally don’t get a behind the scenes view of the largest cargo terminal. Love every minute of it.

    November 24th, 2025 – Malte & Lotte in Stendal

Just a quick two-day visit to see Malte and Lotte in Stendal. It was great fun as always and I saw the first snow of the year on a trip to the forrest. We had a fantastic dinner with lots of wine and good conversation. Most of the images are not mine, which is why you occasionally see me in them.

    November 21st, 2025 – Krefeld

Back to Germany for one last visit to the house. It’s strange when you leave a familiar place behind. The house is incredibly beautiful and it’s soon just a memory.  Some last photos.

    August 12th, 2025 – Museums

Lots of art this week. Margo and I went to the DMA on Saturday and then on Sunday Arno accompanied me to the Fort Worth Modern. All of them are in-between shows so we took in the permanent collections. It was great to get out and we had lots of fun talking.

    May 26th, 2025 – Family

Lots going on and we’re just hanging out around the house. Austin came by for a visit and everyone’s ready for the long Texas summer.

    May 24th, 2025 – Kimbell

Arno and I went to the Kimbell to check out the exhibition on German Art between 1910 and 1945, which was obviously a period of wares and upheaval in Europe. The show is well curated and several artists that my Mom had known personally such as Emile Node and Georg Muche were represented. In fact Muche, who taught at the Bauhaus for several years, was one of her most influential teachers at the School for  Textile Engineering in the early 1950s.

    April 26th, 2025 – Fredericksburg

We had our annual Johanniter Convocation in Fredericksburg, TX this weekend. The town is a tourist destination because of the many wineries around and there are lots of great food options. It is always amazing how many interesting and genuinely nice people I meet at these events.

April 12th, 2025 – An Art Fair and a Gun Range

The weekend was excitingly busy. It started with a visit to the Dallas Art Fair, although there wasn’t much to report on. Later, we went for BBQ, downtown and the gun range. It was great fun and we had a couple of great shooters in the mix.

    April 5th, 2025 – Visiting Dallas

You never really experience the place where you live until you have to show it to someone else. Henk and Susanne are in town for two weeks and we’re making the rounds through the usual spots. It’s a lot of fun to see them here and we’ve gotten quite drunk on Saturday albeit without photos.

    March 6th, 2025 – In the City

Today I am meeting John and Nancy for lunch at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central. It’s always an opportunity to walks the streets for a few hours.

    March 5th, 2025 – Brooklyn

I spent a few days with John and Nancy to pick up the astonishing photographs of Alfred Schwartz, who was Nancy’s Dad. We shipping everything to Texas and I will post scans of the 1950s though 90s imgaes here over time. Stay tuned. First, a couple of shots on the street.

If the images of Alfred have taught me one thing already, it is to be far more selective in what I post here. Up to now, my images are often documents of something we have done or seen. However, now that the kids are out of the house, I can be a lot more selective. Hopefully the quality of images goes up by quite a bit.

    February 15th, 2025 – Austin’s Christmas

We have hd a lovely evening at a friend’s house yesterday and found out that none of us know how to play pool. let alone win a game. Today it’s Christmas albeit with a little less excitement than we had a few years ago. It’s all smooth sailing and our steaks for lunch are taking priority over gifts.

    February 1st, 2025 – Downtown

Margo gave me a lunch and nice afternoon for Christmas and we finally got an opportunity to go out. The weather was a balmy 22C and ot seemed like everyone else had the same idea. It took a whuile to even find parking, but once we had that covered it was absolutely brilliant.

    January 9th, 2025 – Closing the Shop

We’re spending our last night in the house and it’s unlikely that we will ever set foot in it again. Given that it’s been my homebase for close to 50 years, it all feels a bit surreal. A reminder that we don’t actually own the things we have. We’re just looking after them for a while. These last few days have also given us more opportunities to roam and explore.

    January 3rd, 2025 - The Move

We’re goping to fill an entire 40ft container although close to half of it will be taken up by the old BMW. The movers were incredibly fast and efficient. Now it’s just a few weeks before all of this has to find a place in our house.

    December 31st, 2024 – Germany

We had a few opportunities to go out and have some fun. Cologne, Duesseldorf and more than a few dinners with Henk and Susanne including for New Years. It was a lot of fun despite the daily sorting, packing and discarding. One of the things we learned was that Henk is a phenomenal cook. All I am hearing from Arno and Margo these days is that my own cooking is lacking quite a bit after tasting his. : )

    December 3rd, 2024 – Krefeld

I arrived at the house today to begin the long process of sorting through everything. There is way more stuff than we can take and a lot of it isn’t going to fit into our home in Texas. Here are a few images before we have to tear up the place.

    November 16th, 2024 – Korea Town

Margo and I had an itch for Galbi and Gymchi and thus headed over to Korea town for lunch and a few bobas. In fact, we tested two best places side by side to setle which one is better. Confusingly, they were both great in that one had better boba while the other made more versatile concoctions. Nothing was resolved, but we were left quite full and satisfied nonetheless.

    November 10th, 2024 – Fort Worth

Quick trip to downtown Fort Worth and the Modern. We had initially planned to have lunch there, but got distracted by a Cajun place in the city. Great food and the right preparation for the museum. The exhibit was an astonishing architectural installation by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe.

    November 9th, 2024 – DMA & Deep Ellum

Arno and I were bachelors this weekend and lived it up in style. We went downtown, mainly to catch a fabulous lunch at Mercat, but also to see the Frida Kahlo exhibit once more.  We finished our exploits with a walk through Deep Ellum which was lively and busy to say the least.

    October 10th, 2024 – Arno’s Birthday

It was really nice to celebrate Arno’s birthday together once again this year. As is customary, there were a lot of clothing items which always hit the spot. We went for a nice dinner and toasted to many great years to come.

    September 29th, 2024 – The Weekend

First time everyone was back at the house. It’s been great to see Margo and Arno, and I am sure they enjoyed being pampered a bit, certainly having a doting mother around. We just ate very well, which pretty much sums up the two days. It was great fun and we shall do it again in two weeks when we celebrate Arno’s birthday.

    September 8th, 2024 – Meredith’s Birthday

It’s the first time we have celebrated without Margo and Arno in a good while. 18 years really. We had a great day, visited the Frida Kahlo exibit at the DMA and then had an early dinner at the Egyptian Room. All around very nice and relaxing.

    August 15th, 2024 – Oldenburg

Finally had a chance to visit Nils in Oldenburg again and took it. It was great to see him and had a load of fun as we always do.

    July 28th, 2024 – Liz & David

Liz and David came over with their kids for a pizza lunch, We made a full eight pizze and they were pretty much gone, which is an accomplishment. It was a very nice afternoon and we truly enjoyed their company.

    July 14th, 2024 – Austin’s Birthday

It was a belated birthday gathering this year since Austin’s birthday really was several weeks ago. We just didn’t find a time to get together. It was fun though and we had good food as well as plenty of good laughs.

    June 23rd, 2024 – Shopping

We went to the mall today so that the girls could check a couple of things such as building a teddy bear, getting gifts for friends and looking for sneakers off their list. Mission accomplished.

    June 21th, 2024 – Rodeo

Given that Lara is staying with us, a trip to Cowboy Coliseum was in order. Except for Meredith, none of us had actually ever been at a rodeo and thus we were all very excited to go. The show was great and we saw plenty of very tough guys being thrown off bulls and horses. There was lots of lassoing and cattle wrestling as well. Everything we had hoped to see.

    June 16th, 2024 – Fort Worth

We took a road trip to Fort Worth for a walk in downtown and Sundance Square before heading to the Modern and Kimbell for a relaxed day with lots of great art and some good food as well.

    June 8th, 2024 – Downtown

Just popped into downtown for a quick morning walk and a few snapshots.

    June 3rd, 2024 – On the Street

Last day. We are flying out tonight and took a long walk up to Tiffany’s before heading out.The city is interesting because of its people and there’s never a shortage of interesting characters. On the way back Margo and I got out reader cards at the New York public library, which is usually the best souvenir to bring back. It’s hard to say Good-Bye, as always.

June 2nd, 2024 – Coney Island, Brooklyn and Downtown

We’ve covered a long distance today and took a bus through Brooklyn to Ciney Island, which was a long ride but totally worth it. It’s a completely different New York and people actually are normal as opposed to beautiful and fashionable. Of course, we had a Nathan’s hot dog, before coming back to downtown and walking over the bridge to Brooklyn again. We finished our last full day in style with a very nice steak & frites at Pastis.

June 1st, 2024 – Upper East, Upper West

First time we took the subway other than getting here from the airport. All the way up to East 90th on the 4 train, and into the Guggenheim and the Neue Gallerie. We had a fabulous lunch at Cafe Sabarsky and then moved on to the Met, which was way too busy. Through Central Park we went and landed in the Museum of Natural History. Another train to downtown and the ICP and then a brisk walk back to the apartment. Four museums in one day.

    May 31th, 2024 – Whitney Biennale

Today was all about modern art. The Whitney is naturally one of the most interesting buildings in the city, and their Biennale has been their staple for close to 100 years. There were way more artworks than we expected and not all of them on the same level. Yet. some were just amazing. We also got another 20,700 steps in, which is on par with the last two days.

    May 30th, 2024 – Chelsea and MoMa

Long day and lots of walking. We probably walked close to ten miles and covered the High Line, Chelsea, and Midtown. An excellent lunch with Nancy and John at the Oyster Bar. Then on to MoMa for an immersion in the past hundred years of painting and sculpture, back to Flatiron for a shot break and then up to Times Square for the Alicia Keys musical Hells Kitchen on Broadway. We’ve been busy to put it mildly.

    May 29th, 2024 – New York

Margo and I flew to New York today for a long weekend, good food, some shopping (accomplished by now), museums and Broadway. It’s great fun to be back in the city and feels like not much has changed. There certainly are few places where you can survey as much as you do here. People are very individualistic, typically have a lot of character, and don’t mind at all being photographed.

    May 25th, 2024 – Margo’s Graduation

Has it really been 18 years? Today Margo walked across teh stage to receive her High School diploma. She’s finished near the top of her class, already completed two years of college courses, and was accepted into the University of North Texas. In just a few months she’ll be living in a dorm at the Honors College and begin her own life.  I can’t tell you how proud we are of her. Well done Margo!

    May 4th, 2024 – Margo’s Birthday Party

We didn’t really have time to celebrate Margo’s birthday properly during the week. Instead, she invited her best friends for Korean BBQ and a visit to a karaoke room afterwards. Of course, we missed the signing, but I am told it was enormous fun. I’ve thrown in a few photos that I took while we were waiting towards the end.

    April 27th, 2024 – Festival of Joy

Margo and I went to the DMA only to discover that there was a huge Indian festival going on in the park. We really enjoyed the buzzing crowd, where everyone had lots of fun and was somehow busy doing something. Every now and then it’s really nice to forget that you’re in North Texas.

    April 14th, 2024 – Margo’s Graduation Pictures

Typically when you graduate from high school, you send out cards to friends and family. We took well over 200 shots this mornings and then whittled it down to six which was really hard.  Margo look amazing in many of them. Anyway, here is a selection.

    March 31st, 2024 – Easter

We celebrated Easter with Alex, Emilia and Massimo this year. This gave Margo a chance to hone her babysitting skills a little bit and it was just incredibly cute to see Emilia explore the house. Great reminder of how it was with Margo and Arno not too long ago. I miss those days.

    March 19th, 2024 – Traveling (Again)

This was a very short trip and it blew by in no time. Unfortunately, we did not have any time to see local friends or visit with Malte and Charlotte in Stendal. Next time…

    March 16th, 2024 – Duesseldorf

At some point during every trip we end up on the Koenigsallee in Duesseldorf. Don’t ask me how, but somehow we all have a honing beacon that sets us on the right course. Margo had already bought a whole bunch of stuff at Zara and now it was Arno’s turn to get a really nice pair of Chukka boots and some shirts.

    March 13th, 2024 – Dinner with Susanne & Henk

We’ve had a few nights to get the jet lag out of our system and met with Susanne and Henk this evening for a wonderful steak that he prepared to perfection. It was all great fun and is always really refreshing to get together.

    March 9th, 2024 – Traveling

Margo and I flew t Germany to visit with my Mom and also to keep Arno company on the way back. She’s an absolute pro by now and knows the ins-and-outs of international travel like the back of her hand. It was great to finally arrive.

    February 5th, 2024 – Vegas

A conference, a couple of days, and a crazy city. Everyone was getting ready for Superbowl and there wasn’t a lot a time to walk or shoot.

    January 14th, 2024 – Antonio’s

It’s really nice to have Arno at home and feels like we are a family again. Not that that’s missing when he’s gone, but there just is a part that isn’t there. We went to Antonio’s in Addison, which is probably the best Italian in town and a joint that I frequented with regularity when I lived in an apartment above the restaurant. Oh, and we had snow. Not a big deal for the rest of the world, but in Texas…

    December 31st, 2023 – New Years

We had a wonderful evening with Marilyn and Juergen and certainly celebrated the New Year in style. Arno won the best dressed award as he does every time while Margo got the most beautiful prize. And what do I get? Don’t think there are any awards elevating mediocre culinary skill.

    December 25th, 2023 – Christmas Day

Round two. We celebrated the American Christmas this morning and exchanged gifts. As always there were a lot of clothes, some shoes, and books. Arno and Margo were both extremely thoughtful with their  gifts and we’ve all been surprised. We finished the day with a nice dinner as we usually do.

    December 24th, 2023 – Heilig Abend

Time-honed traditions tend to bring back memories. We have always celebrated Christmas twice at our house given that we run a half German and half American outfit. Everyone will get their German presents on Christmas Eve, or Heiligabend, and the American ones on Christmas Day as is the respective local tradition. I am pretty sure that the kids thought they’d get more presents this way when they were younger. Now it is just reason to have two outstanding dinners in a row. Austin typically joins us for the occasion as well and it was fun to see him, as always.

    December 23rd, 2023 – Arno’s Shoes

Fun project and quite possibly a weird sensation for Arno as he gets older. We still have a box full of Arno’s kid shoes and I’ve been wanting to photograph them for a while now. The idea is to document his maturing process a little bit through something that he carried with him where ever he went. So many experiences have been had and memories were made in these shoes. We set up the studio today to capture them. They will be framed for the dining room now.

    December 21th, 2023 – Germany

I spent a few days in Germany to see my Mom and visit old friends. Arno got out of his school for Christmas as well and we flew home together. It was great to see the place where he now lives and meet some of his friends. Before heading back we visited Hamburg for business meetings and to explore the city a bit. Our first stop was the venerable Cafe Paris, where we just barely got a table (the maitre d’hotel really checked us out before making a favorable decision) and, of course, the Kunsthalle nearby.

    August 20th, 2023 – Motherwell

Margo and I are holding down the fortress at the moment while Meredith and Arno are in Germany to get him situated at the new school. We decided to visit Fort Worth this morning for an early lunch and the current Robert Motherwell exhibition. It was truly phenomenal and well worth the trip.

    August 12th, 2023 – Last Weekend

This was our last weekend before Arno moves to Germany to attend an incredible boarding school on the island of Spiekeroog in the North Sea. We were all happy and sad, nostalgic and excited, and quite possibly a bit through the wind. This has been a long time coming and we have all started to process his move in our own ways.

July 23rd, 2023 – Walk in the Park

We took some time this afternoon for a quick run to the park. Arno and I had been dying to go for a photo shoot for weeks, but work somehow always got in the way. Well, this was our chance and we had a ton of fun. Arno took one of my older cameras, which was also good practice for his year abroad and I went with the Monochrome.

July 1st, 2023 – Dinner with Henk and Susanne

It is always fun to go to Susanne and Henk’s house. They are excellent cooks and always gracious hosts. We have also been friends for most of our lives so that catching up is great fun. I brought my Mom to see their newly built home on the next morning as well. It is located right next to a forest, has a stunning, very modern architecture and fantastic interior design.

    May 17th, 2023 – Meeting Astro

I received an invite to try out Amazon’s new home robot Astro as a beta version and quickly jumped on it. It’s not every day that you get to try new home technology before it goes on sale to the public. Expectations were running high and we were all excited when it finally showed up at our door. The unit looks great and was easy enough to set up. Everyone had to make poses in front of the cameras so that Astro could recognize us later. We quickly found that the applications are very limited though. I could not get useful information while cooking, news were severely limited and video streaming off the table. Astro ultimately only stayed for a few days and will have surely found a new home by now.

    April 29th, 2023 – Margo’s Birthday

This year we had no choice but to celebrate Margo’s birthday a few days early. It was a really nice dinner followed by opening gifts from everyone. It’s crazy when I think about it. This is her 17th birthday. The very first one feels like yesterday and I still remember many little details from the day she was born.

    Mar 20th, 2023 – Cookie Monster

The following does not require a comment, obviously. Suffice it to say that this was not staged. Things like that actually happen in our home.

    Mar 19th, 2023 – Product Shoot

I rarely get the opportunity to make photos that serve a purpose beyond this site. Thus, it was a lot of fun to capture product shots for Carl’s new jeans company. The light was great and there is always a lot to see in the workshop.

    Mar 12th, 2023 – Downtown

Lazy Sunday. We had to break the routine and get out of our shell. So we traveled downtown, took in the Nasher and then walked around the park for  bit. There was a lot going on between a flee market and the regular food trucks. Routine disrupted, I’d say.

Feb 18th, 2023 – Dinner with Adrienne and Joe

It’s been a relaxed and pleasant evening. We started early to make Schnitzel which turned out alright. However, as always, the fun was in the company and we had a great time together.

    Feb 4th, 2023 – Dinner & Wine

Tonight was Margo’s first experience with wine. We wanted to make sure that happens in a safe environment, of course, given that it will happen no matter what. While we were at it, why not begin the journey with a Lafite. She’ll surely discover the other end of the spectrum by herself. Meredith had bought four steaks and we made a phenomenal relish, if I may say so, to round out the experience.

    Jan 15th, 2023 – Rückenbild

When artists paint a figure from behind, this is called a Rückenbild because it shows the person’s back. The intent, of course, is to put the viewer into the position of the person depicted. Today, we had a few of those and we were busy. Two fantastic exhibitions at the DMA, then a stroll through the park, and a BBQ dinner in the Bishops Art District.

    Dec 25th, 2022 – Christmas

It was time for our American celebration. I had to wake Margo and Arno up with a loud doze of Depeche Mode on the stereo at 10:30am this morning, which hasn’t happened ever before. They are growing up fast. We had a wonderful day, exchanged many gifts and ate far more than we should have. Can’t say we could’ve done it any better.

    Dec 24th, 2022 – Weihnachten

Per our tradition, we celebrated the German Christmas with Austintonight. He helped me to make dinner before we opened the first batch of presents.

    Dec 16th, 2022 – Henk & Susanne

I had a chance to visit with Henk and Susanne in Krefeld. They are building a new house at the moment, which is incredible and beautiful. After walking around the site for a while, we sat down to eat and talk until midnight.

    Dec 4th, 2022 – Carl’s Atelier

Arno and I went to Carl’s atelier today to take a couple of shots for his website. His process is amazing and the bespoke jeans he creates are second to none. Of course, we were also able to confirm what we had known all along, namely that Arno makes for a very good model.

    Nov 24th, 2022 – Thanksgiving

We’ve had a really nice Thanksgiving with friends from Germany, enjoyed a wonderful Greenberg Turkey thanks to Joe, and Arno nearly had more beer than I did.

    Oct 15th, 2022 – KImbell

Spur of the moment decision. We haven’t been to the museums in Fort Worth for a long time. Margo needs to analyze four paintings for school and thus we went. The permanent collection is still incredible and we saw a highly interesting exhibition of Murillo.

    Oct. 10th, 2022 – Arno’s Birthday

Funny fourteen. We celebrated Arno’s birthday with a Schnitzel dinner on the night before and a hearty breakfast since he would not be home until later in the evening. It was fun to watch him as he unwrapped everything. He got new furniture for his room, so the rest of  the presents were not as elaborate this time around.

    Sept. 8th, 2022 – Meredith’s Birthday

Knowing that she likes to read fiction, suspense and murder mystery, we gave Meredith a years’ worth of books for her birthday and hid the other presents inside of the pile. Dinner was a perfect steak & frites with peppercorn sauce.

    Sept. 1st, 2022 – Couple of Shots

Just a few snapshots over the past month of so. Dinner or lunch and signing books for Meredith.

    Aug 19th, 2022 – Frankfurt

I went back to Germany for a few business meetings and to pick up Arno who had spent an incredible summer with Charlotte and Malte in Stendal and Karlsbad. We took some time to explore Frankfurt, take in an exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle and then proceeded to the airport for a few hours of sleep ahead of our flight home.

Aug 8th, 2022 – Quick Dash to the DMA

With Meredith and Margo in New York and Arno exploring Karlsbad in Czechoslovakia, I had some time to dash off to the DMA for an hour of roaming around in the museum. There was a huge line at the entrance due to crowd control and bus loads of people inside. But it was totally worth it and nice to roam through the permanent collection.

    July 10th, 2022 – Frankfurt

Our last night in Frankfurt; this time without Arno who is staying in Stendal for five weeks. All of us were sad that the trip is over again and it would have been great to spend a bit more time in Krefeld and Stendal. Of course, the prospect of sleeping in our own beds again is what drove us home. The return trip was uneventful and smooth.

    July 9th, 2022 – In the Forest

Today we went into the forest for a BBQ. The kids were able to run through the woods and explore while we had a chance to sit back and relax. It was a perfect day with lots of sunshine.

    July 8th, 2022 – Stendal

It was great to see Malte and Charlotte again after a long break due to Covid. Arno will stay for the summer and is surely going to grow up in spades. The kids all get along and there is much horsing around going on at all times. Most important, he can run around as much as he wants to in Germany and, unlike in the US, kids play outside a lot. It’s going to be a really exciting experience for him and he certainly could not be in a better family.

    July 6th, 2022 – Duesseldorf

Meredith and Margo went to their annual haircut in Duesseldorf, which gave Arno and me a chance to roam the city. We went into the museum, walked along the Koenigsallee, had a fabulous Korean lunch and picked up the girls several hours later. In the evening we met Marcus and Christine for dinner.

    July 5th, 2022 – Cologne

Everyone needed to get out of the house for a change and we finally found a car. Cologne was a natural choice to visit the Ludwig Museum, built on a chocolate fortune and one of the largest private collections of Picassos, which had a fascinating Noguchi exhibition. Lunch at Frueh, as we always do, and then dinner with Henk and Susanne in Krefeld. It was great to see them both and we spend several hours just talking.

    July 3rd, 2022 – Krefeld

Finally here! We still did not have a car and were thus bound to what could be reached on foot in a reasonable amount of time. We spent most of the day at home and met Torsten for dinner in the city park.

    July 1st, 2022 – Longest Day

We left DFW the evening before, flew through the night and arrived in Frankfurt the next morning. After standing in line at the rental car counter  for two hours, we gave up and took a train instead to arrive in Krefeld by afternoon where it took another hour or so to even find a cab driver willing to take us. Everyone crashed early and slept heavy.

    June 18th, 2022 – Couple of Shots

It’s been a long time that I have had the opportunity to go out and just roam around with the camera. Obviously, still a bit rusty after years of not being on the street, but it’s fun nonetheless.

    June 12th, 2022 – BBQ

We finally had a chance to go back to our favorite BBQ. Happy faces all around.

    May 28th, 2022 – First Swim

It’s been pretty warm outside for the last few weeks and we decided that it is time for a proper swim. The water was still bitter cold, at least for my taste, but we hd a lot of fun goofing around in the pool. Afterwards we went for an ice cream at Eataly and then started to cook … of course.

    May 22nd, 2022 – Austin’s Birthday

Austin’s birthday is still two days off, but this was our only opportunity to celebrate with him. Per his request, we made schnitzel for dinner and then gave him our gifts.

    May 17th, 2022 – Arno’s Concert

Arno is playing the sax in the school band this year and they performed for peers and parents. The concert was really well organized and everyone played beautifully. It was great fun all around.

    May 2nd, 2022 – Margo’s Birthday

Margo turned 16 this year. Can you believe it? It was a week day and we did not really have a chance to celebrate much. Margo did so with good friends on the following weekend, but cameras naturally weren’t allowed when she met them.

    Apr. 20th, 2022 – Friends

We invited several good friends over this month and are truly glad to be social again. Ben, Minoo and their kids came over for a schnitzel while we made pizza, and had quite a bit of wine, with Adrienne and Joe.

    Apr. 4th, 2022 – Fort Worth Modern

We finally found the time to do something together outside of the house. I have sent the last four years focused on work and only that in building up a startup. Everything else naturally suffered and amplified due to the pandemic. Now that we seem to be getting back to normal, it was high time to pack everyone in the car and do something.

Mar. 26th, 2022 – Juergen & Marilyn (Photos by Margo)

Juergen and Marilyn came over for Alsatian Tarte Flambe and Margo took on the camera. Her images are really, rally good and show so much talent. She experiments a fair amount, but also gets the people right, catches everyone at good moments and her framing is neat and composed. I could not be prouder of her.

    Feb. 9th, 2022 – San Fran

I am teaching a workshop on blockchain in San Fran this week and had a few moments to sneak out to shoot. The city is fascinating because of its diversity and energy. Where else can you go from rags to riches faster than here? Our venue was in the heart of the city and just a perfect location to work for a week.

    Jan. 15th, 2022 – The Tailor

Barbara and Hans-Walter invited us over for a great dinner and we got a tour of a true startup. With dozens of old sowing machines in one of their garages, their son is building a jeans manufacture that is absolutely fascinating. The jeans look really good and everything is made to measure. Can’t wait to put my first order in.

    Dec. 30th, 2021 – Beef Jerky

We all sat down to prepare a special salad for New Years that requires making our own beef jerky and that in turn requires  lot of work on everyone’s part. It was a lot of fun to come together though.

    Dec. 25th, 2021 – Christmas

We all took it easy on Christmas Day. Of course, we had a few people in the family who wanted to get to the presents part of the day quickly. We obliged and there were lots of presents to go around as every year.

    Dec. 24th, 2021 – Weihnachten

We had a very nice Christmas Eve with Austin, as we do every year. Arno helped greatly in the kitchen and also gave us an impromptu solo on his sax. At some point people did not want to be photographed any more. I must have overdone it. Wonder how …

    Dec. 16th, 2021 – Germany

Just a quick visit with Mom. Things are still not normal and pandemic testing is still required, but at least not all stores were closed. I met my first real boss in Cologne for breakfast after 26 years of communicating virtually!

    Nov. 17th, 2021 – Saxophone

Arno started to play the sax two months ago and has gotten pretty good by now. He gave an impromptu concert tonight and even improvised for us.

    Nov. 8th, 2021 – Mavs Game

Arno’s friend Freddy invited him to a Mavs game, which was great fun. We hadn’t been to a sports even in ages and Arno is their biggest fan. Great atmosphere and  a win at home. We could not have asked for more.

    Oct. 1oth, 2021 – Arno’s Brthday

Arno invited his two best friends over for a night of gaming and movies before we celebrated his birthday in style. He now has a really cool setup for his MacBook and can surely hack into any system by now. Dinner naturally involved our favorite Hong Kong dumpling joint.

    Sept. 8th, 2021 – Meredith’s Birthday

We celebrated Meredith’s birthday this week and had a lot of fun with it. Margo and I gave her a bracelet and shawl respectively. However, Arno had the idea to make her favorite food, Dibbelabbes, for her. He bought the ingredients with his own money and then out each in its own gift wrapping so that he could hide them throughout the house. Each gift contained a card with a clue as to where the next one might be. It was all great fun and delicious, too. On Sunday Austin joined us for lunch to celebrate as well.

    Aug. 12th, 2021 – Out and About

We are truly enjoying the freedom from the pandemic at the moment and grab every bit of normal life from eating in restaurants to going back to the museums. Everyone is still getting started and things are far from normal, of course, but it’s nice to experience the illusion of normalcy for a bit.

    July 18th, 2021 – Couple of Shots

Just a couple of shots from the past two weeks …

    July 4th, 2021 – Summer Is Here

It took longer than usual for temperatures to come up to Texas summer levels and thus we had only been in the pool once for our first swim. In any case, we are enjoying the summer and also ability to go about our lives as we always have. Last night we had an excellent fondue thanks to Margo’s help in the kitchen.

    May 27th, 2021 – Victory Lap

End of the school year! Margo and Arno received their scorecard and things are looking up. Both recorded straight As in every class, so it was time to celebrate and take the victory lap. By popular choice we ended up at Maggiano’s where Bonnie, Margo’s godmother, joined us for an eventful, funny and hilarious dinner naturally followed by an Italian ice cream.

    May 22nd, 2021 – DMA

It’s back to normal. Can’t tell you how many cars there were on the road today. Loads of them. Arno and I determined that we should pay a visit to the Dallas Museum of Art and thus we went. The exhibits were as good as always, there were lots of people and you could tell that everyone isstilla bit jitterish about what to do or how to conduct themselves. It was great fun though and we completed the tour with a tremendous milkshake from Wild About Harry’s.

    May 21st, 2021 – First Swim

It was a bit late this year, but we, well Arno, finally got the first swim in. We were told that the water is still cold and that that’s just fine, but for obvious reasons no one dared to follow suit. Can’t wait for the temperatures to come up a bit …

    May 2nd, 2021 – Margo’s Birthday

Our little girl turned 15. I am still wondering how it all happened so fast. It seems like yesterday that I saw her for the first time at the hospital and now she’s a teenager who will learn to drive pretty soon. It was a good day and Margo truly enjoyed her presents. Knowing that she would get a pair of Doc Martin’s, she even came prepared to put them on right away. Austin came over as well and we all made Saltimbocca for dinner.

    May 1st, 2021 – Preparations and a Korean Dinner

The last couple of days were spent in anticipation fo Margo’s birthday. Tonight we went to our favorite Korean place to celebrate leaving the 14s and gradually entering the 15s.

    Apr 22nd, 2021 – Ballpark

Gerard had invited Chris and me to a tour of the new ballpark in Arlington, which was interesting. Due to the pandemic the Rangers are just now starting to use the facility. It was certainly nice to take the camera out again as well.

    Apr 10th, 2021 – Dinner with Chris & Mario

We had been planning to get together for a long time, but, as for everyone, things shut down of course. Mario celebrated his birthday last week and I still had an old debt to Chris for providing invaluable medical advice when I first caught COVID last year. Thus, we made good, old-fashioned schnitzel and cucumber salad followed by a big (procured) pie.

    Apr 9th, 2021 – Fashion Show

Meredith and Margo went an what can only be described as an epic shopping spree. Of course, Margo looks stunning in her new clothes, which worries me a great deal. Anyway, we took a few snapshots and had loads of fun in the process.

    Mar 30th, 2021 – Dallas Arboretum

Hans-Walter and Barbara invited us to the Arboretum tonight for a member-only event with music, wine and food. People were still socially distancing, however, the whole experience felt really normal again. Something we hadn’t experienced for 14 months. It was a nice glimpse into what normal life will soon be like again.

    Mar 27th, 2021 – Birthday Dance

Margo had choreographed a dance for my birthday, but ran into the typical production delays that often plague creative work. It was finally ready to be performed tonight, which spurred Arno into  an impromptu performance to the same music as well. It was lovely to watch and I certainly feel honored.

    Mar 19th, 2021 – Couple of Shots

More family life. Today Margo and I cooked for a couple of hours. We will have friends over tomorrow and needed to prepare a red wine glaze and pistachio ice cream beforehand. The sauce took us over four hours to make and required a full bottle of wine as well as  several pounds of meat and veggies to essentially end up with a cup of liquid. However, there is just nothing like it. Can’t wait!

    Mar 14th, 2021 – Dinner

Pledging to make better use of my cameras, we took it out for dinner tonight. It’s a start …

    Mar 13th, 2021 – Sign of Life

Well, we are still around, albeit not having posted for a while. Here are some shots from the past few months including the week of “Snowmageddon” where we had no power and loads of snow.

    Dec 31st, 2020 – New Years

The last day of the year was about as uneventful as the previous nine months had been. It’s amazing how time flies and here we are. Another year and lots of great things to report for it. Everyone is healthy, happy and in a good place. All of us beat COVID a few months ago and we came out alright. I don’t thik we could have asked for more.

    Dec 25th, 2020 – Christmas

The big day is finally here and everyone is very excited. Especially Arno was walking on eggshells and really wanted to get to the part with presents quickly, of course. However, we first made billionaire bacon and then proceeded to celebrate. Lots of presents and lots of joy. In the evening we had a nice steak dinner and then everyone settled into their own things to do.

    Dec 24th, 2020 – Weihnachten

Here we are. It’s Christmas again and we have barely had a year since the last one. As tradition dictates in our home, we celebrated with the German gifts from Oma today and called her to wish her a Merry Christmas. We all miss being in Germany right now. In the afternoon Austin came by to exchange gifts as well and we concluded the evening with a nice dinner.

    Dec 11th, 2020 – These Days

These past few weeks have been uneventful, so we decided to create a bit of excitement ourselves. Arno is the dressman of the family and lived up to his reputation while Margo is the one with a big heart for everybody around her.

    Nov 25th, 2020 – Thunderstorm and Pizza

Last night we had a thunderstorm warning, sirens were going off and we all assembled in the closet to sit it out. Your biggest worry usually is that one of the trees might fall on the house. It was all good though and we moved on. Tonight we had Italian an Roma, which is a complete hole in the wall with lots of character and food that is sufficiently good to keep going back.

    Nov 2nd, 2020 – Couple of Shots

Just a few shots from the past weeks, going to restaurants and hanging out at the house. Margo and I went to lunch at a local diner on Sunday to find time  to talk.

    Oct 11th, 2020 – Hangover

We were all a bit through the wind today and everyone mostly kept to themselves. Austin came over to say Hi, which was nice. We hadn’t seen him in a while.

    Oct 10th, 2020 – A Perfect Day

We celebrated Arno’s birthday in style. First a stint to Pinstack where we met Freddy, his best friend. Then on to unwrapping presents and a round of games. Arno got lots of presents and we wrapped 40-some books for him as one, which was a big surprise and a lot of fun.

    Oct 9th, 2020 – The Night Before

Tomorrow is Arno’s birthday and we’ll celebrate in style. He is extremely excited, did not go to bed easily and really wanted the night to be over before it had even begun. We had a lovely dinner at Basile and then turned in early. Tomorrow is a big day.

    Oct 3rd, 2020 – BBQ Dinner

We had dinner at one of our favorite BBQ joints in town, Lockharts. You get all of your food loosely wrapped in wax paper, take it to your table and then use the wrapping as your plate. It’s messy and fun.

    Sept 8th, 2020 – Meredith’s Birthday Day 3

It’s actually a lot more fun for everyone to celebrate over several days. Meredith got presents more than once and we got to enjoy the moment with her. Anyway, she received a lot of hand-painted t-shirts and has choices to make now when she goes for walks early in the morning.

    Sept 6th, 2020 – Meredith’s Birthday Day 1

We started to celebrate today so that we’d have the weekend and a bit more time. Meredith opened two of her presents while we kept the rest for Tuesday. Arno greatly helped to cook today and is becoming quite a chef.

    Sept 5th, 2020 – Birthday Prep

Meredith’s birthday is coming up and so we started to prepare. All of us thought about what gifts she might want and then we set out to buy a few. Since her birthday is on a Tuesday and just after Labor Day, we thought we start celebrations early. All of us painted a few t-shirts for her, which was great fun and we got ready to make a few special meals as well.

    July 7th, 2020 – Lazy Saturday

After several weeks of non-stop work, I was finally able to spend time with Arno and Margo, jump into the pool and cook a few things. We had our first breakfast together in months and splurged on milk shakes. It’s great to let go …

    June 21st, 2020 – Couple of Shots

Just a few shots in the house given that we’ve been quarantined for a while now. It does lift the mood to carry a camera with you where ever you go.

    June 6th, 2020 – First Swim

The temperatures have been summer-ish for a few weeks by now, but never really came around to warming the pool water. So, today was the day. We all jumped in and had lots of water fights. It’s good to be back out here in the fresh air and the sun.

May 31th, 2020 – Walk in the Park

I met Massimo in downtown today for a good, long walk. It’s been at least two months, so this outing felt really good.

    May 24th, 2020 – Summer Break Projects

Given that Margo and Arno are staying home this summer, we have begun to work on projects that keep the mind sharp and the intellect challenged. Both are working four hours a day on assignments. Margo’s first project is to read, understand and interpret Huxley’s “Brave New World” while Arno works on understanding the differences between electric and petrol-fueled car engines.

    May 16th, 2020 – Playing Cards

We made time to play cards after lunch, which is always a highly competitive affair in our house. There were instances of smack talk, a bit of boasting and even the occasional victory lap. Today is my Mom’s birthday and we were also thinking about her. I know we all wish we could have been with her in Germany.

    May 9th, 2020 – Haircuts

All of us were in dire need of a haircut and Rachel graciously agreed to stop by the house this morning. We all needed to wear masks which made it quite comical. In any case, it feels like we’re human beings again.

    May 2nd, 2020 – Margo’s Birthday

Most parents will likely tell you that their kids are growing up way too fast. To me it never felt that way, possibly because we’ve always been very close and it just seems natural. Margo turned 14 today and she’s not a kid anymore. Over the last year she has matured quite a bit already and the organic process of settling into her own skin has long begun. It is a lot of fun to watch and Arno isn’t far behind.

    April 20th, 2020 – Couple of Shots

Quarantine has morphed into daily routines. After initial adjustments, all of us now behave as if nobody’s watching. Pajamas all day, no problem. Flip-flops and socks, sure thing. Hair down and no gel, that’s fine. Five marsh-mellows in one bite, do it again. We have to keep it fun around here and everyone’s pitching in.

    March 17th, 2020 – Chris and Mario

There are people who bring a tremendous energy where ever they go. They light up a room or get everyone to do things that nobody would have done otherwise. Chris and Mario are a perfect example. It’s always fun, always engaging and there are always surprises when they visit. The photos speak for themselves.

    February 16th, 2020 – Kirin Court

We had a very delicious lunch at Kirin Court, our favorite Dim-sum place in town today. With temperatures balmy and the sun out, our wait was almost as enjoyable as the food.

    February 10th, 2020 – Frankfurt

On my way back to the States. The trip was cut short by a pretty big storm over Germany so that I ended up staying at the airport with plenty of time on my hands.

    February 8th, 2020 – Bonn

A quick visit to see Charlotte, Malte and their family in Bonn over a nice dinner. Half of these shots were taken by George, who is a uniquely promising talent behind the camera.

    February 6th, 2020 – Gewerbehafen

A few shots from the design district in Duesseldorf. The area morphed from a forlorn industrial park to some hottest real-estate areas in town.

    January 20th, 2020 – Glam Shots

We needed to take one good picture, which eventually ended up being 228 tries to choose from. In all fairness, there were a couple of cute ones and we also had a bit of fun manipulating each other to look nice in front of the camera. It certainly did not always work out. Can you guess which one is will be printed and framed?

    January 19th, 2020 – Brunch

We met Royd, who arrived just after my camera battery had died, for brunch today. It was a great morning and we thoroughly enjoyed our conversations and his company.

    January 4th, 2020 – Basketball

Arno played a game with his school team today. They have gotten substantially better under a new, more competent coach and now play really well together. More than anything, each player performed on a  much higher level than before.

    December 27th, 2019 – Tarte Flambe

I was very tempted to call this entry “the reluctant chef” but that wouldn’t have been fair the the person panfrying bacon for this team effort. We figured that we have never tried our professional pizza oven for Tarte Flambe and thus gave it a shot. The results were excellent and to be repeated soon.

    December 25th, 2019 – Christmas

Arno woke all of us up this morning and was extremely excited about the events that were to unfold soon. We had a quick bite to eat and then proceeded to open presents. The majority of the day was, as always, spent in the kitchen. We made a fabulous potato roast for lunch and had sous vide steak frites for dinner.

    December 24th, 2019 – Weihnachten

Austin came over for our traditional German Christmas today, which is celebrated on Christmas Eve. We opened the gifts from my Mom and exchanged others with Austin. It was nice to see him again after some time, but he’s moving back to Dallas so that we’ll hopefully get to visit with him more often.

    December 7th, 2019 – Flying Tiger

We all went to watch Arno’s Taekwondopracticetoday, which is always great fun. He is very good and has earned lots of belts by now. It the art of high kicks, but what’s much more important is that the boys learn to respect everyone, beginning with those who are older or unable to fend for themselves. Of course that is a very important cornerstone of Korean culture and a beautiful way to approach life.

    November 28th, 2019 – Thanksgiving

We took a non-traditional approach to Thanksgiving this year. Instead of cooking all day, munching on Turkey and all the rest, we simply went to a brunch. It was fun and left us with plenty of opportunities to play and spend time together. What was missing, of course, was the company of good friends and that’s maybe the most important part of celebrating after all.

    October 10th, 2019 – Arno’s Birthday

Now, the big day. Arno was excited as ever and could not wait to open his presents in the morning. As an added benefit, his very good German friend Hucky was here to visit with Charlotte. We had a great day, made a fine steak for dinner and then the girls had wine while the boys scattered all over the house and played video games.

    October 9th, 2019 – Funny Faces

Tomorrow is the big day and Arno decided that he wanted to go to Nordstroms bistro for dinner. Unfortunate, but not unexpectedly, I did not manage to get any straight faces on camera.

    September 8th, 2019 – Meredith’s Birthday

Meredith’s birthday is always a big deal and requires a bit of preparation. Arno and Margo had made a song and poem for her respectively, which was really nice. On Saturday, Chris and Mario came over with their daughter for schnitzel and wine. It’s been a very long time since we had laughed this much in one night. Meredith really enjoyed the evening and we all toasted to her before calling it a night.

    August 24th, 2019 – Museums

It’s probably been close to two years since we had visited the museums in Fort Worth so we decided to make a go of it. Unfortunately, the lines for the Monet exhibition were once around the building, but the rest of it was just as interesting.

    August 18th, 2019 – The Weekend

There is nothing better than a relaxing weekend and swim in the pool. Arno had a friend over for the night as well and we all watched a movie.

    August 15th, 2019 – Miscellaneous

I haven’t really had a chance to take any photos over the past few months due to work. So there is an assortment of images that I managed to pick up every once in a while.

    July 20th, 2019 – Pizza Night

Barbara and Hans-Walter came over for an evening of making pizzas. Everyone contributed one pizza, but under the condition that it’s one that you cannot buy in a restaurant. So, each pizza had to be completely new. Margo has a huge chocolate chip cookie and Arno a marshmallow and chocolate pizza,  both of which were delicious. However, the grand prize of the evening clearly went to Barbara for her truly incredible rainbow pizza.

    June 23rd, 2019 – Quick Swim

It’s been weird outside. On one hand it’s extremely hot and on the other we’re getting one thunderstorm after another. Today was the third in two weeks that cause damages and power outages. We went for a quick swim in-between though, which was great fun.Oh, yes, and I totally locked the kids out just to get a few nice photos.

    June 18th, 2019 – Basketball

Arno really enjoys playing basketball and it seems that the sport likes him back. He’s learned a lot over the last coupe of weeks during the summer league. Of course, when ever he does things like steal the ball, run across the court and score, we unfortunately are pointing the camera elsewhere so that any evidence of heroic deeds is still scant.

    June 15th, 2019 – Horseback

I took Arno to his riding lesson in the morning and had lots of fun watching him as he fearlessly cantered around the ring.

May 30th, 2019 – Visiting Charlotte and Malte

We were lucky that Lotte and Malte were still in Bonn while we were there so that the visit was easy and the drive very quick. It was really nice to visit with them, as it always is, and we all had a great time.

    May 29th, 2019 – Makeovers and a Skateboard

Margo and Meredith had their salon day in Duesseldorf today, which freed Arno and me up to explore toy stores. After much deliberation, he settled on a new gun and a skateboard. Of course, the girls had hours of fun being pampered and treated with all kinds of stuff that entirely escapes my imagination. We visited Christine and Marcus in their restaurant for a truly exquisite lunch that left everyone thoroughly satisfied.

    May 28th, 2019 – Tourists

It’s strange when you feel like a tourist in your own country, but of course that’s what we are. I think everyone has a strong connection to Germany, but we’re also removed from the life here.

    May 26th, 2019 – Family Photos

Olga and Vlady were very kind to bring a camera when they came over for coffee and cake. Olga took a lot of really nice photos, which was particularly beneficial for me since I am usually never in any of the images on this site.

    May 26th, 2019 – Fair Grounds

We all had a good nights’ sleep and were ready to tackle the day. Olga and Vlady came over for coffee and offered to take a family photo of us, which was really nice since we usually don’t ever have everyone on the same side of the camera. Later, we went to a fair with lots of rides and even more sweets.

    May 25th, 2019 – Travel Day

On a flight to Germany today with everyone being very excited to see Oma and a few friends. The travel day is always long and we actually made it through to evening, which mean everyone slept like a rock for the night. In the evening, we played roulette and naturally, made a recording of who won how much so that it can be known to all who’s winning and who isn’t.

    May 17, 2019 – Margo’s Play

We watched Margo play in ‘Alice’ today, which was very well done.

    May 2, 2019 – Margo’s Birthday

Big day. Margo turned 13 and we celebrated it over the weekend with a really nice dinner as well as at breakfast and dinner again. She had asked for a new room with a more adult bed and more adult pictures for the walls and so on. We had lots of fun together and all of us enjoyed spending the day with our little angel.

    April 14, 2019 – Downtown

The day was just too good to pass up for a couple of shots in the park, at the DMA and in Deep Ellum.

    April 7, 2019 -A Couple of Shots

Just a few casual observations with the camera …

    March 24, 2019 – The Dallas Zoo

Barbara and Hans-Walter invited us to the zoo today, which was a really nice diversion from being home and allowed us to spend the better part fo the day outside.

    March 23, 2019 – Arno

The girls are in Louisiana for a volleyball tournament and so Arno and I were left to our own devices for the weekend. We had a nice dinner at the Mermaid Bar and went to my University lecture together in the morning. Afterwards, it was lots of food and a movie. We probably also had more ice cream than any one man can take, but we’re going to work it off tomorrow with a visit to the zoo.

    March 16, 2019 – Skate Park

Arno and I went to the skate park in East Dallas today, which was awesome. There were a lot of really good guys and they all seemed to flow through at different times. Everybody was extremely friendly and most of the guys walked up to Arno to give him helpful tips such as ‘stand on your toes like a ballerina’ and ‘snap the board like you’re kicking someone really hard’. It was great to watch most of the other guys, who did impossible jumps and  incredible ollies.

    March 10, 2019 – Arno and Wine

We had a nice bottle of red and a steak dinner tonight, so Arno wanted to try the wine. He took the shot glass in which is was served a little too literal though and drowned all of it in one swoop.

    March 7, 2019 – Swiss Ave

Torsten visited today and we got to spend the afternoon together, which was a really welcome reprieve from work.  I had not done anything else for the last eight months and getting out almost felt like a prison break. We visited downtown as well as Swiss Avenue for the architecture and then cooked a nice dinner.

    March 3, 2019 – Couple of Shots

Some images that I was able to take throughout February and the beginning of March

    January 27, 2019 – Mostly Arno

Arno accompanied me to a lecture at UNT last week and was largely unimpressed. In fact, he let it be known later that he did not learn anything although he did answer one of my questions to the class. And on Friday we went to the Mermaid Bar for dinner where we ran into  Gina and had, well, what we always have when we go. Arno is a creature of habit when it comes to butter noodles without anything else.

    January 17, 2019 – A Couple of Shots

We had a nice dinner tonight and lots of fun with Arno’s photography, which he updates on his own site now. My own shooting is still very much on the back-burner.

    December 25, 2018 – Christmas

The big day is finally here. We unwrapped a lot, laughed a lot and played a lot. Of course, we watched a few movies as well.

    December 24, 2018 – Weihnachten

As every year, we celebrated the German Weihnachten on Christmas Eve. Austin and his girlfriend came over for lunch as well, which was very nice.

    December 22, 2018 – Getting Ready

Just two more days. Everyone’s excited and exhausted. Margo went to lunch with Bonnie while we did more packing and horsing around.

    December 12, 2018 – More Snapshots

A couple more miscellaneous shots from the past two weeks.

    November 30, 2018 – A Couple of Shots

With work being busy, there really wasn’t any time for me to photograph at all. I managed to get a couple of shots here and there.

    November 3, 2018 – JHG Champagne Tasting

We had an excellent turnout at our annual Champagne tasting this weekend, which was superbly organized and executed by Marcus. Lots of great conversations, lots of excellent wines and lots of fun.

    October 26, 2018 – Taekwondo

Arno received his green-blue belt today and did a great job with his routine. It was really fun to watch him excel at the sport, which also comes with a healthy dose of confidence.

    October 14, 2018 – Arno’s Party

For Arno’s birthday party with his friends from school, we rented a game truck for the boys and made a ton of pizza for everyone. It was a great day for Arno and certainly a busy one for us.

    October 12, 2018 – Mavericks

Marat had given us  four tickets to the Mavs game tonight and it was Arno’s first pro sports event. He was very excited and invited Freddie, his best friend from school to come along. It was a preseason game, which meant we saw a lot of new players and a lot of magic on the court. We had a great time and a fitting occasion for Arno’s birthday.

    October 10, 2018 – Arno’s Birthday

This was it: never in the single digits again. The first image shows Arno on his last day of being nine and then we move on to the morning of his birthday. We started by opening the gift from his Oma, which is a beautiful bow tie and then continue to the afternoon when he got to open the other presents including a new phone. This, of course, was extremely exciting. Numbers were soon exchanged and calls were made. Now, it’s already business as usual.

    October 5, 2018 – Margo

Just a couple of shots …

    September 30, 2018 – Lunch at School

The Dad’s Club at St. Monica organized a fund raiser through selling pasta for lunch and dinner today. We only had time to pop in during lunch, but had a great time and certainly a great lunch as well. Arno helped with the clean up as part of his boy scout team.

    September 22, 2018 – Cooking at Home

We had a very nice afternoon with Barbara and Hans-Walter making lobster rolls from the ground up and really enjoyed the results as well. On Sunday Margo and Arno both got dressed up for their weekly Cotillion sessions, where both get their finishing touches on manners and ballroom dancing.

    September 15, 2018 – JHG Dinner

Tonight was our second annual “Eat Like a Knight” dinner at Bob’s house. This was also the first one where I did not organize or prepare anything, which was great. Marcus did an much better job and really put it together just perfect.

    September 8, 2018 – Meredth’s Birthday

We had a quiet evening to celebrate Meredith’s birthday with a steak dinner and lots of great presents. Arno gave her a list of reasons why she is the best Mom in the world and Margo sang a song that she had written for her.

    September 2, 2018 – Labor Day BBQ

Julie and Stan invited us over for BBQ and a swim at their house. We had a great time, as always, and really enjoyed the company of a few of their neighbors and friends.

    August 20, 2018 – Museum and Milkshake

Yesterday, we found out that the Highland Park Pharmacy, one of our favorite hangouts for as long as we can remember will close for good by the middle of next month. The old building has to make way for a new office complex and thus a 106 year-old institution vanishes much to our dismay. We decided to go to the DMA first, take in a bit of culture before heading to HPP. It was completely crazy when we got there. Apparently everyone is coming to pay their respects before they close the store.

    August 13, 2018 – Cheer

Margo and Arno have moved from the Highlands to a new school in town and closer to the house. We love it already and were welcomed with open arms by the parents and students. Margo had her first taste of it during cheer camp, which takes place over a weekend  just before the first day of school. The school actually has far more cheerleaders than football players, which I find very refreshing.

    August 7, 2018 – Flash

It’s always fun to shoot with a flash and wireless trigger so that you hold the unit in one hand and the camera in the other. The images are always interesting, however due to the considerable discomfort any subject might experience, I can only do it so often.

    August 3, 2018 – Friday Night

Long week! Margo had a hiphop dance performance today and Arno is still getting to know his new MacBook. We were all left pretty much without juice, decided on an easy dinner at the Mermaid Bar and to turn in early afterwards.

    July 29, 2018 – More Modeling

We’re still working on the shots for an agency and probably just need a better photographer. It’s a work in progress, but the main thing is that Margo and Arno are willing to give it a try independent of what comes of it in the end.

    July 28, 2018 – Couple of Shots

It’s been a busy week. Arno purchased a new MacBook Pro with his savings, which makes use very proud, while Margo had a theater play in which she performed extraordinarily well. Unfortunately, they did not allow cameras.

    July 20, 2018 – Commercial Shoot

Quinn invited Arno and me to visit him in the studiofor a shootthis afternoon. It was really fascinating to realize how much work goes into 30 or 60 seconds of TV and online spots. The set was incredibly creative with industrial lasers that can burn a hole into the wall and thus have to keep moving. The commercial is for top-tier college football teams so Arno also got to marvel at a bunch of extremely tall and strong guys.
10/27/18: we saw the finished commercial at lunch today for the first time and it looked awesome.

    July 11, 2018 – Modeling

We’ve been taking photos to apply with modeling agencies … here are some of them.

    July 8, 2018 – Couple of Shots

It’s been a while and we have not really done anything special other than all seeing Lion King in Fair Park. However, that event was completely off for cameras and the ushers enforced it hard. I had to fight to even get my camera into the venue. Anyway, here are a few shots from different occasions and more on Margo and Arno soon as we’ll be working on their modeling cards now.

    June 30, 2018 – Quick Swim

Austin visited us for lunch and we all hopped into the pool beforehand. The funniest moment though was when Margo catapulted a chunk of whip cream onto Arno’s pants. She hit just the spot to make it very embarrassing.

    June 29, 2018 – Margo’s Fashion Show

Margo spent this week in fashion camp where she learned about models, agencies and how to walk down the runway. Today was the clear highlight for the girls as they had the opportunity to show off all of their newly acquired skills. It was fun to watch!

    June 22, 2018 – Germany

Just a quick trip to visit my Mom. Nils and I met up in Oldenburg, I went to see Marcus’ new restaurant and visited with Charlotte and Malte until deep into the night. It’s always great to catch up with everybody, even if it’s only for a few short moments.

    June 15, 2018 – Back Home

We’re finally back home and are pretty happy about it, too. The morning was utterly uneventful and the drive not worth a mention. Back in the house, we all scrambled into our own rooms for some welcome privacy, cherishing the ability to closeonesdoor ononesclose relatives for a few precious hours.

    June 14, 2018 – Day Three

So, we did go to the pool and we swam – again. It did not help with yesterdays’ sunburns though and forced us to take it a bit easier for the rest of the day. After threatening everyone with a modern art museum and being vocally overturned, we still needed to get away from this place for a bit. We all got in the car and drove to Austin for a tour of the capitol building and some very decent food in a hip Italian place.

    June 13, 2018 – Day Two

Our first full day was characterized by lots of swimming, floating races down the lazy river and strong efforts on all sides not to use foul language. We mostly succeeded. Other than that, we also ate a lot as we always do, but without the cooking, which was very nice. It’s so easy to not worry about it or spending lots of time in the kitchen. Tomorrow we’ll try to convert our lobster tan into a real one while swimming a whole lot more.

    June 12, 2018 – Lost Pines

Meredith has a conference in South Texas each year and so we all decided to go. It is in a place called Lost Pines, which immediately prompted Arno to suggest that we switch the E and I in the name on all signs. Great idea! Anyway, we’ll be here for the next couple of days and need to figure out what to do besides playing pool and swimming in the pool, which seem to be the only sensible options so far.

    June 9, 2018 – Arno’s Goodbye

Arno had invited his best friends for pizza and a swim. He’ll be joining a new class after the summer at St. Monica, so this was also a goodbye party for him.

    June 8, 2018 – Willy Wonka

Arno and Margo have been at Hockaday for the week as part of their summer camps. While Margo was focused on fashion design and sewing, Arno learned how to perform a play and, of course, acted in it as well. It was great fun to watch the kids and to see Arno on stage.

    June 6, 2018 – And Yet More …

So here are the last of the portraits. I am fully paid up and we all got what we wanted.

    June 4, 2018 – And More …

I am still getting my $2 worth of photos (more soon). Here are some portraits throughout the day. Otherwise lots of cooking, horsing around and a bit of swimming, now that the pool is perfect once again.

    June 2, 2018 – Portraits

I knew this day would come. Arno and Margo now want to be paid for their portraits. We mutually agreed on two dollars for 100 images each. Next, I’ll probably have to pay the espresso machine as well …

    June 1, 2018 – Friday

Arno was home from school today due to a shoulder injury and so we spent some time at the pool, had a great burger for lunch and horsed around a bit while I worked in-between.

    May 30, 2018 – Arno’s Graduation

Arno cleared the hurdle to fourth grade today, which was quite easy for him. We attended his very long awards ceremony and then went home. I told him he could pick any place he’d like for lunch and that’s how he tricked me. We ended up eating at McDonalds, which we virtually never do, much to Arno’s delight.

    May 28, 2018 – Memorial Day

This weekend was our first in the pool, which has just been refinished a few weeks ago. It was really nice to be back outside, enjoying the sun and playing around. We had a really quiet weekend without obligations and just a lot of time to play games, cook food and watch movies.

    May 24, 2018 – Around the Room

I’ve just been playing with the camera a bit tonight.

    May 23, 2018 – Margo’s Concert

Margo has been dabbling in music for a while now and had played the trumpet for about a year now. Today she finally got her chance to show it all in front of an audience of parents and fellow students at her school.

    May 21, 2018 – A Birthday Party

Arno and I went to a birthday party for Nolan, one of his best friends, which took place in a really large gym. The boys played football and soccer and ran around quite a bit. It was really fun to watch him interact with his friends.  Afterwards, we all met up for dinner at our local Thai spot.

    May 12, 2018 – JHG Wine Tasting

We had our annual JHG wine tasting tonight, which was great fun and, as always, highly interesting.

    May 11, 2018 – Friday

This was a really busy week, albeit the fact that I rolled off a project and wasn’t working twelve or more hours per day for the first time this year. We resurfaced the pool, will get a new backyard fence this weekend and had lots of stuff going on for Margo and Arno. Maybe most interesting, Meredith bought Margo her first pair of heels, which is about a decade too early as far as I am concerned, but who’s asking?

    May 2, 2018 – Margo’s Birthday

Margo was very excited when she went to bed last night and we all had to promise to get up really early so that we have enough time to unpack presents. Obviously, we all complied as we began our day around 4:45am this morning. Margo got clothes, a new phone and a necklace. In the evening, I picked up the kids and we all met at Houston’s for dinner.

    April 29, 2018 – Downtown with Tourists

Arno and I went to see an Ansel Adams exhibition at the Dallas Holocaust Museum today and then wandered off into downtown. He had never been to the Kennedy memorial and so we went. It was actually very nice and we had lots of fun taking pictures.

    April 28, 2018 – Margo’s Birthday Party

Margo invited her best friend, Ashley, to celebrate her birthday today. We went to lunch at Houston’s, saw a girl teen movie and then moved on to the beauty salon, had lots of cookies and ice cream and roamed through the Mall a lot as well.

    April 15, 2018 – Dinner

We took the 94 Mercedes out for a ride today, which turned out to be a bad idea as the rear window went down, but not up again. There’ll be a major repair bill in our future somewhere. After bringing the car back into the garage, we proceeded with safer transportation to make a second attempt at dinner.

    April 8, 2018 – Breakfast

I changed my flight to a 5am out of Boston this morning, which meant little sleep and a long day ahead. The upside was that we were able to hit Norma’s for an all-American breakfast of bacon and eggs in the morning.

    April 7, 2018 – Convocation

Today we had our convocation at the German retirement home in Boston. It is great to see everyone after a year and there is always lots to catch up about. We’ve had many good conversations, lots of new insights and met new folks as well, which is certainly a pleasure. Ruedigerand I went for a walk across the Commons before our church service and formal dinner in the evening where we had lots of laughs and a really good time.

    April 6, 2018 – Boston

We arrived in a snow storm today, which was quite a change from the 22C we had in Dallas when we took off. I had a few hours to walk around and luckily the sky cleared a bit so that I could walk and shoot a little. In the evening, we had a reception dinner at a local sea food restaurant, which was very special as it always is.

    April 1, 2018 – Easter

Given that Easter Sunday and April Fools Day fell on the same day, we decided to have a bit of fun with it. Meredith had the great idea to give Margo and Arno empty presents, which worked out exactly as planned. Of course, they both got a goody bag with a few small gifts and some candy in the end.

    March 25, 2018 – Chillida Exhibition

We saw a very interesting exhibition by Eduardo Chillida today at the Meadows in-between Burger House and Paciugos. It was really nice to  get out a bit and enjoy the day.

March 11, 2018 – Football in the Park

Our Sunday was thoroughly uneventful except that Arno and I went to the park so that we could throw the ball for a bit. Arno has a very good arm and can throw very well. Thus, we need to work on catching the ball a little.

    March 4, 2018 – Arno’s Riding Competition

Arno got to show off his horseback riding skills today in the annual competition at the SMU stables. He did very well and mastered the challenge with stride. Overall he finished second, which left him a bit ruffled. Hopefully that will just turn into more ambition down the road.

    March 3, 2018 – The Park

We needed to decide where to spend another perfectly sunny afternoon. The downtown park sounded real good and gave us a shot at visiting as many of the museums as possible. It also provided a much needed break after a very long week of work for me.

February 25, 2018 – A Movie and Some Cool Moves

Arno and I took off today to see “Black Panther” at the Highland Park Village, which was awesome. We had lunch at the local grocery store, then proceeded to the theater and really enjoyed the flic. Afterwards, we went to the park and the DMA. Since it was a balmy 22C out, we quickly lost our sweaters and Arno jumped right in with the break dancers who typically show up on Sundays.

    February 19, 2018 – The Weekend

We’ve a very engaging dinner with Diana and Martin last night and then another great meal with Hans-Walter and Barbara today. It was really great to catch up with everyone as we laughed through most of the night and talked through the day.

    February 14, 2018 – Valentines

Since the date fell into the middle of the week, we exchanged gifts in the evening. Meredith got a wobbly head figure of the Queen, which she must now fashion on her desk at work, but which more likely ends up in a drawer or on someone else’s desk. Margo and Arno both got what they wanted and I ended up with a big box of chocolates, which I do and don’t want – both for obvious reasons. Afterwards we frolicked around.

    February 3, 2018 – The Party

Several good friends came over for our party tonight. Meredith procured all the food so that we could just focus on our guests, which was really nice. Unfortunately, I did not catch everyone on film while we talked a lot, laughed as much and had a couple of glasses of wine.

    February 2, 2018 – Birthday

Today was my fiftieth birthday. We started the day early since we all needed to get to work or school and then opened presents in the evening. Margo and Arno had both written letters, which was very sweet.

    January 28, 2018 – Duck Sunday

We went over to Michaela and Tony today for a fabulous lunch with potato soup and duck. It was a lot of fun, as always, and we spent a great afternoon talking and tasting a bit of wine.

    January 20, 2018 – A Night to Remember

Erin and Michael came over for a glass of wine and some pizza tonight. We had lots of laughs and ended up drinking quite a bit of wine. Most amazingly, Margo and Arno stuck around for most of the dinner, which is most unusual. They were just very comfortable.

    January 14, 2018 – Weekend Fun

We had a very relaxing weekend, played games, watched the Kingsmen movies and visited a park with dinosaurs. What else could you want?

    January 7, 2018 – Buying New Boots

It’s been two years since Arno got his Cowboy boots and was time to move him up in size. So, after a big breakfast and a quick round of backgammon during which everyone refused to pay me for their losses, we went and tried a couple of nice ones.

January 6, 2018 – Walk in the Park

I had a few hours in-between the morning and afternoon activities and decided to take a walk around downtown while is was balmy and sunny.

    January 1, 2018 – New Years Day

Since everybody stayed up past midnight yesterday, we had an adequately slow start into the day. For the most part, we caught up on our Star Wars and tried to keep warm.

    December 30, 2017 – This Week

It was a quiet week with some work and lots of time to play with old and new toys. Tonight, Bonnie and David came over for a dinner that Margo prepared as a Thank You for her godmother.

    December 25, 2017 – Christmas

Round two of Christmas dealings. Today we all received the American presents, surprised each other a lot and then played a couple of rounds of the Whimpy Kid boardgame that Arno gave to Margo. Having received a Nintendo Switch, Arno is now part of the in-crowd while Margo got an entire new wardrobe for the summer.

    December 24, 2017 – Weihnachten

As every year, we cherish German as well as American traditions over Christmas. Margo and Arno received their presents from Oma today and we also had Austin over, who could not make it tomorrow. So we exchanged gifts with him as well and then had a nice lunch with him. Meredith and I both received a book on philosophy and a German movie from Austin, which was very nice.

    December 21, 2017 – Haircuts

It was due time to impose structure on a couple of unruly heads. So, we went for Tan’s Eggroll, a complete hole-in-the-wall with great Chinese food, for strength and then proceeded straight to Rachel. As a result, we all look like decent human beings again. Next, we put the finishing touches to our rooms. Margo and Arno had both done an incredible job in sorting through toys and books that they do not need anymore and which we have donated for poor children. In return for their hard work, both now have 48 hours of “unlimited everything” which means they can stay up as long as they want to, watch as many movies as they like, etc. I was told someone stayed up until 1am this evening.

    December 10, 2017 – Brunch

This morning we were invited over to Marcus and Marie’s home for brunch. Unfortunately, it looks like they might be going back to Germany soon and we will miss the good company and friendship. At least we’ll soon have more more stop on our German trips since they are moving to Dusseldorf and thus close to home.

    December 9, 2017 – Invention of Christmas

We had another highly engaging JHG lecture by Thomas tonight on the invention of modern-day Christmas. It was quite a surprise to learn that it is a purely German product which only came to the US in the 1830s while Santa Claus was an American invention who first made is appearance during the civil war; only for Northern soldiers as a bit of psychological warfare.

    December 6, 2017 – Food

Just a few impressions from our favorite past-time: eating good food.

    December 5, 2017 – Trumpet

We may not have Satchmo in the family, but Margo sure is trying to get close. She played the trumpet for me for the first time tonight, which was a lot of fun. Most astonishingly, she took Beethoven’s Ninth in a completely new direction and it was subsequently very hard for both of usnot to burst out as we waited for any vital signs of D minor …

    December 3, 2017 – On Film

It has been months since I was last able to take the Pentax 6×7 out for an adventure, so I was very excited to have a few hours and four rolls of film to play with. The process is not easy, you only get ten shots per roll, which means there are no second chances. Once you are done, you then have to first develop and then scan the negatives, but it is well worth it in terms of the quality of the images. My first stop was Deep Ellum North of downtown where I shot in color.

Second stop, now in B&W, was Bishops Art District …

    December 2, 2017 – Northpark

Margo and I had the afternoon off and wanted to see the new Murder on the Orient Express movie. Once at Northpark Mall, we grabbed lunch at the Mermaid Bar and then headed over to the theater dodging large x-mas crowds. The movie did not disappoint one bit and was filmed in 65mm to make it an incredible experience to watch.

    December 1, 2017 – Adventskalender

Meredith had the excellent idea to give Margo and Arno books for Advent this year. She put together 24 packages, one for each day, for each of them. Given how much we all love books, the excitement ran high tonight.

    November 25, 2017 – Pizza Night

Stan and Julie Ryfa came over with her two sisters for a pizza and wine night. We truly enjoyed the great company and had a few good pizzas along the way as well.

    November 22, 2017 – The Week

We had a few slow days leading up to Thanksgiving, which gave us a chance to goof around and spent a lot of time together. There was a lot of dressing up, dancing around and cooking good food.

    November 17, 2017 – Talent Show

Tonight Margo had her talent show at school, which was really amazing. We saw many really good performances and had a lot of fun. Margo’s class danced to Surfing USA by the Beach Boys.

    November 12, 2017 – In the Kitchen

Everything happens here: dramas regularly unfold in this space, most work gets done in it, we celebrate our successes here andwe obviously cook a bit as well. If you were to reduce our house to just the kitchen, nobody would probably notice until it is time to go to bed.

    November 5, 2017 – Downtown

I took a few hours off today and grabbed the camera for a stroll around the DMA and park. The museum currently has a very interesting infinity box piece by Yayoi Kusama, which pretty much requires getting an appointment. I was lucky to be there over the lunch hour and could slip right in.

    November 4, 2017 – JHG Champagne Tasting

Tonight, we had our first annual Champagne Tasting at JHG Texas, which was very engaging. We tried five sparkling wines from different countries, which led to interesting revelations especially based on the varietals that were used to make them. My favorite was a Californian. The organization also awarded it’s first scholarship for nurses tonight, which was very exciting.

    November 3, 2017 – Tae Kwon Do

Arno has been training in Tae Kwon Do for a while now and just received his second belt this week. He really likes the sport, which is apparent in these images.

    November 2, 2017 – Margo’s Semifinals

They did it. Tonight Margo’s team beat the best team in their league to move into the Championship finals this weekend. The game was really thrilling and a great pleasure to watch. Needless to say, the girls were incredibly excited and just very happy to be playing for the big trophy on Saturday.

    October 31, 2017 – A Roman and a Rock’n’Roller

Tonight was Halloween and despite the expectation that some of us,by now, might be too old to collect candy house-by-house, we all went out and mounted a solid attack on the neighborhood. There were quite a few people on the road, which was fun to see.

    October 30, 2017 – Margo’s Playoffs

Margo’s volleyball team has fared extremely well this year after a mixed performance during the last season. Most of the credit surely goes to their coach, who is a phenomenal motivator for the girls and also extremely fair to all of them. The game was close and very thrilling to watch. Everyone on the stands enjoyed it thoroughly.

    October 26, 2017 – Friends

Luckily, I had a chance to visit Malte, Charlotte and the family during my stay in Germany. It was great fun and we talked well into the night, as always.

    October 22, 2017 – Car Heaven

Do cars go to heaven? Yes, in fact they do, but they pass through a small, little known workshop in Oldenburg Germany before transitioning from one existence to the next. While visiting Nils, I got a first-hand glimpse into the process and saw the final results as well. It’s simply a magical place and you can’t help but wonder what happened to each of these vehicles, their histories and the stories they might tell, if they would only come to life. Needless to say, we had a great weekend with lots of laughter, good food and great conversation.

    October 15, 2017 – Highland Park Pharmacy

Another visit to one of our favorite spots, the Pharmacy. We took Meredith to the airport for a conference and then had all day to roam around, which we did. Arno finally found the car he wants to drive when he grows up. Now he’s just got to work a little to get there …

    October 10, 2017 – Arno’s Birthday

Two long days of patience and waiting have passed, more than a dozen bags with gifts from Sunday are still untouched and now the day is finally here! We all got up very early to have enough time for Arno, who unwrapped a couple of presents and then went on to School. In the afternoon Meredith picked up Margo and Arno as early as possible and we continued to unwrap, dance, smile, shout and scream. In the end, it was probably the birthday with the  most presents, yet, for Arno and we all enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Houston’s afterwards.

    October 8, 2017 – Arno’s Birthday Bash

It actually isn’t his birthday today, that will be in two days’ time, but it was the only weekend we had available until November to celebrate Arno’s birthday with friends and families. One of the parents in Arno’s class recommended a place called Pinstack, which is a bowling alley with laser guns, a climbing wall and a ton of machines to play. It was a great afternoon and now Arno really can’t wait to open all of his presents on Tuesday.

    October 7, 2017 – Downtown

Saturdays are busy. In the afternoon, we all took Arno to his riding lesson and then moved Margo to a birthday and pumpkin carving party South of downtown. The rest of us continued on to a walk through art galleries and dinner at our favorite BBQ spot in downtown.

    September 28, 2017 – JHG Lecture

Today, we heard a very engaging lecture by Prof. Dr. Haspel, the Executive Director of the Lutheran Academy in Erfurt, on the parallels between Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr. The event was very well attended and thoroughly interesting.

    September 26, 2017 – Fathers Day Mass

It’s been three months since Father’s Day, but we had the appropriate mass at school today and so I went with Margo and Arno. As in previous years, it was nice to see all the kids walk in with their Dads and for me to be there for Margo and Arno. Both had made very nice presents for me.

    September 21, 2017 – Dancing

We had a little music going on this evening which spontaneously turned into a party. Originally Arno was on his way to Taekwondo and Margo planning to stick around to help me fix dinner. Then things took a different turn.

    September 17, 2017 – Cotillion

Margo started her second season of etiquette coaching, this time at the Dallas Country Club, which was fun to watch. We only caught the end of her session, but it was very nice to see her enjoy the atmosphere and her peers.

    September 11, 2017 – Modelling

Arno needed some images for school on Wednesday, so we set out to snap a few images that look cool, professional in a James Bond way and handsome as well. Now we’ve got to print them all since we can’t decide which one is best …

    September 10, 2017 – Modern

To give Meredith some time off, the rest of us jumped in the car and drove over to the Modern in Fort Worth. It was an easy drive as many people were likely still on holiday and since premiums gas remains a sought-after commodity here in the area. We had a very good lunch during which Margo told us her body can’t eat any more meat while she was wolfing down slices of crispy bacon.

    September 8, 2017 – Meredith’s Birthday

We all got up real early this morning to wish Meredith a Happy Birthday and to give her a present from Margo and Arno to open. After work, we continued with more presents from all of us and with a dinner at the local Greek place.

    September 5, 2017 – New York

I had an hour or two before meeting Nancy and Johnfor dinnerat our customary spot, the Oyster Bar, and took a walk down and then up the High Line. It was pretty touristy though and I quickly moved back to the streets where lots of professionals were rushing towards the subway or home.

    September 3, 2017 – Downtown

Not having been able to photograph much these past few months due to work, I took the opportunity to venture into downtown for an hour of visiting the DMA and park. Margo helped me in the kitchen where we finally managed to perfect our french fries, which was great fun as well.

    August 27, 2017 – The Weekend

We had avery niceweekend with a bite of decent food andexcellentcompany in that Barbara and Hans-Walter came over for dinner. Margo and I ventured out to Lockhard for our favorite BBQ and some shopping for fancy hats (we didn’t buy any) on Sunday.

    August 19, 2017 – Flying Fish

We had lots of contentious views on where to eat dinner so we decided, well actually I forced everyone, to go to Flying Fish. The meal was accompanies by much drama and minor psychological scars, but everyone survived the extremely healthy food, which is a start.

    August 16, 2017 – Margo Day

Margo had a really nice idea today: she got a nice gift for everyone in the family and told us that she will present it on a day of her choosing. We quickly evolved the idea to include a special day for everyone so that we’ll have small, but heartfelt presents four times a year. Next up is Arno, who will pick a day in the Fall.

    August 13, 2017 – Chicken Nuggets

Arno and I made chicken nuggets from the ground up this morning, which turned out really well. Arno is a very good chef already as he understands the intricacies of taste and how to refine a sauce or dish slightly to our liking. For dinner I made schnitzel with white asparagus, and it was a self-inflicted punishment to peel the darn things for an hour and a half.

    August 6, 2017 – The Weekend

We had a rather short weekend since I had to work on Saturday and needed to fly to Phoenix on Sunday morning already. It was nice none the less and we had a bit of good food at our traditional Korean restaurant on Friday evening.

    July 28, 2017 – Margo’s Play

For the past three weeks, Margo has been in a theater class at her summer camp and tonight it was showtime. The performance was incredibly well put together and had a thoroughly professional touch. Most of the actors were older and thus received more prominent roles, but it was a great experience for her in any case. After all, she got to watch and learn from many kids who already are semi-professional actors. We thoroughly enjoyed the show and the fact that Austin came out to see her as well.

July 23, 2017 – Iris van Herpen at the DMA

Arno and I went out for lunch and decided that it might be a good idea to check out the new exhibitions at the DMA. We had lots of fun at the creative center where Arno invented a new communication device that seemed surprisingly close to resembling an automobile and then went into the truly astonishing Iris van Herpen exhibit. Given that fashion runs in the family and that Arno is very much on top of it, it was very nice to see a designer who can stretch our perceptions by showing familiar things in a completely new way.

    July 22, 2017 – A Swim and A Swim

We had a very busy day with math tutoring in the morning, swimming lessons after lunch and a birthday party in the afternoon. It was all great fun though and we really enjoyed the party with good conversations and a phenomenal pool.

    July 16, 2017 – Fancy Dress

We are still recovering from the long trip and thus spent aquietweekend at home. Meredith bought clothes for Margo and Arno, which naturally meant that we had to try them on and parade around.

    July 7, 2017 – Going Home

Well, our time is almost up by now. We made some last minute purchases and spent time with my Mom before heading back to Frankfurt and a nice visit with the Fischers in Sinsheim.

    July 4, 2017 – Chiemsee

Nici and Andreas had invited a few of us over to their home at the Chiemsee after the convocation where we spent two wonderful days with food and wine. We visited king Ludwig’s castle on the Herrenchiemsee island and had an all around wonderful time. On the way back, we were very fortunate to escape an accident between three trucks that occurred literally a 100 yards ahead of us on the highway. If we had been 15 seconds further advanced, we could have been in the middle of it all.

    July 2, 2017 – City Tour

We ended our stay in Erlangen with a tour of the city, which was engaging and fun. Our guide was a professional historian and educator, so we all learned a tremendous amount.

    July 1, 2017 – Convocation

Today we attended the Johanniter convocation, which is always great fun and highly interesting. I am amazed by the caliber of people each time we go.

    June 30, 2017 – Erlangen

Margo, Meredith and I went to the town of Erlangen for our Johanniter convocation while Arno stayed with Hucky in Bonn for a few days. The town is beautiful and still very much preserved since it wasn’t bombed nearly as much during the war, due to US tanks being too close by the time the British got around to destroying it, as other parts of the country were.

    June 29, 2017 – Krefeld

By now, we spent a couple of very nice and relaxing days with my Mom in Krefeld.

    June 26, 2017 – Perfect Hair Day

Meredith and Margo went to their annual four-hour hair appointment and loved every second of it. Obviously, they look like they belong to a far richer family every time they come out, but Arno and I are stll allowed to tug along.

    June 25, 2017 – Travel Day

Flying to Germany never gets any easier. We were all packed this morning and ready to go when Ray showed up to take us to the airport. The flight was very much uneventful and we ended up in Frankfurt with a bit of energy left. We made a quick trip to Dusseldorf over lunch and took it very easy otherwise.

    June 18, 2017 – Father’s Day

This year had a special surprise in store: Margo and Arno both performed beautiful dances for me which they had choreographed and rehearsed for the past week. It was really nice to see them and I couldn’t be prouder.

    June 17, 2017 – Quick Swim

We’ve not  been outside much this year and so we now use every opportunity, no matter how short, to get out and soak in the sun.

    June 15, 2017 – Raclette

I guess we’ve had some miscommunication about fondue versus raclette and cheese versus broth. Margo and Arno both want the meaty version where you stick a piece of cow or pig into a pot until you’re reasonably sure that all bacteria has withered and then you stuff it into your mouth. Well, what we did was a typical raclette with cold cuts, pickles, onions and cheese on top. There were few happy campers tonight.

    June 11, 2017 – Season Opener

Arno and Margo had a swim earlier, but it was still pretty cold and a short affair, so today really was the opening of the pool season for us. It was a balmy 90 degrees outside and the water wasn’t too bad.

    June 9, 2017 – New Clothes

Just a few shots from this week and mainly today. Margo participated in a fashion show at her Hockaday summer camp and promptly returned with a complete new outfit.

    June 7, 2017 – Around the Room

Just playing around a little, I decided to try to take a few shots in the room to capture anything that looks interesting. That actually sounds a lot easier than it is and there are lots of hard choices in regard to what to include or leave out, how to approach an image and how to frame the shot.

    June 3, 2017 – Arno Riding

It is always fun to watch your kids in sports activities and you can often catch yourself being very proud of what they accomplish. For Arno, it is horseback riding that makes it worth my while. He has been a natural and absolutely fearless from the very first time, when he rode Stefan’s horse in Germany, on. My Dad rode exactly the same way, so it must be in his genes.

This evening we were invited to an excellent dinner at Carol and Eric’s house. Eric is likely the best amateur cook I know, so this was a lot of fun and a real treat. It was also weird to be sitting it out as I wasn’t allowed to help. It was a very good experience all around though.

May 29, 2017 – Movie at the Mall

Arno wanted to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie and so we ventured out to Northpark Mall. The movie was actually pretty good ans we both enjoyed the experience. Of course, we couldn’t go back home without having an ice cream at Paciugo’s first where we promptly ran in Marcus and his family.

    May 27, 2017 – JHG Dinner

Tonight we had a medieval dinner at the Clark residence, which worked out great andwaswell-received. Everyone had fun and the food was excellent.

    May 24, 2017 – New York

I had meetings on the following day and took a few hours to walk from the Southern tip of Manhattan to Central Park and then back down to Grand Central for a very nice dinner with Claudius and Gesa. It was pretty much a cloudy day and the light conditions changed every few steps, which made it very challenging to achieve satisfactory results throughout.

    May 21, 2017 – Architecture

I took the Pentax 6×7 out today to get a couple of nice architectural shots. These are just test images I took with a digital camera to find the best angles and spots for the film shots. Hopefully, this will eventually morph into a new project to document more of the urban environment here in Dallas.

    May 19, 2017 – Eating Out

We’ve been very busy and also lazy, which resulted in having to find good, yet affordable restaurant food.

    May 17, 2017 – Final Exams

As the final exams come closer, everyone has been studying real hard …

    May 14, 2017 – Mother’s Day

This was obviously Meredith’s day and we spoiled her as much as we could. Arno and I started the morning by watching the F1 race in Barcelona, which wasn’t really her cup of tea, but things progressed from here. The three of us had a couple of very nice gifts for her and we all went to Northpark for anoutsidebrunch on a perfect day. Back home, we cooked for her and had great fun playing “Trash”.

    May 12, 2017 – Athlete’s Banquet

Tonight Margo was honored at her school for successfully playing on the fifth grade volleyball and basketball teams. There were a lot of parents, a lot of speeches and the kids had lots of fun.

    May 7, 2017 – Bishop Arts

While Margo and Meredith met with her godmother for a birthday lunch, Arno and I ventured out to Bishop Arts district where we had a feisty lunch at Lockharts and then took a few shots in the area.

Margo came home from her shopping trip with what basically amounts to her new summer wardrobe. She had a lot of fun shopping and picked very wisely as well. Here she is giving me a private fashion show.

    May 6, 2017 – The Party

Margo invited her closest friends from school for a movie night and pizza contest at our house. The girls all decorated their own pizza and then got a prize (an ever-popular fidget spinner) for their creation. Surprisingly, it worked out in a way that each of Margo’s guests won a prize. Afterwards, they watched the movie and had a ton of popcorn.

    May 2, 2017 – Margo’s Birthday

Margo turned eleven today. I really can’t believe how fast she is growing up. This morning we celebrated her German birthday with the gift she received from my Mom and then in the evening we went to Houston’s and she unwrapped all of her other gifts.

    April 3o, 2017 – Lazy Sunday

No much to report. Everyone was so exhausted from the past few weeks that we decided to do surprisingly little today. Margo and I went shopping for her birthday party next week and Arno spent a lot of time with one of several Lego sets he’s not had a chance to build, yet.

April 23, 2017 – Main Street Arts Festival

Arno and I went to the Forth Worth Main Street Arts Festival today to get a couple of nice street shots from the event. We left really early to get there before the festival really started up and also because the light is just best between 10 and 11, the so called golden hour with great shadows and lots of dark spots and sunlight. We stopped at PF Changs for a quick lunch and then headed back out for more photos.

    April 22, 2017 – Couple of Shots

I haven’t been able to photograph as much as usually do and certainly as I would like to. It’s been too busy lately and we really did not have time for a couple of series. These images were taken over a two-week period at home and the school where Arno participated in the second grade living museum. He was Pericles and caught a bit of flack from the minister for impersonating a man who was divorced and never bothered to get married to his second wife, but that did not stop him from picking a fierce warrior and skilled politician as his subject. Good for him!

April 10, 2017 – Deep Ellum Arts Festival

The Deep Ellum Arts Festival is a great place to shoot, lots of fascinating people, nobody complains about being photographed and there’s always a million good backdrops. We walked for a couple of hours until everyone was out of juice, but it was well worth it.

    April 9, 2017 – Our Week

Just a few show from this past week. Somehow I never managed to get enough together for an entry here so these are all over the place.

    March 26, 2017 – Lunch

We had a late night yesterday and really only made it out of the house for the unavoidable food-intake today.

    March 25, 2017 – JHG Wine Tasting

Tonight we were at the annual JHG Texas wine tasting, which had the theme of underdogs, basically wines that are underappreciated and from unknown regions. It was great fun, as always, and Nici celebrated her birthday as well with cake and a song.

    March 19, 2017 – DMA Exhibition

The DMA has staged a fantastic Mexican art exhibition at the moment and it is hard to even find parking. Yes, the works by Rivera, Kahlo and many other first-rate artists was clearly worth the hassle. We actually did not have to stand in line due to our membership, which made it even better. The museum manages the flow of people very well so that you never feel that it is crowded.

    March 18, 2017 – Season Opener

It was clearly a first when Arno decided that he wanted to go for a swim in March. Usually the pool season doesn’t start for another month at least, but then again, it is pretty warm already. Margo joined in pretty soon afterwards and both suppressed their shivers as they got out of the cold water again. In the end, it was good fun for everybody.

March 15, 2017 – Hunting in the Kitchen

Arno played around with his bow and arrow for a bit tonight …

    March 12, 2017 – The Weekend

We actually had a much quieter weekend than we had anticipated. Our dinner plans for Saturday were crossed when the folks we had invited canceled and today other friends reported the onslaught of the flu so that we could not visit with them either. We took to the Meadows instead and saw a phenomenal Ribera exhibition and then concluded the adventurein stylewith our favorite milkshake.

    March 5, 2017 – Lazy Sunday

Not much to report today. We watched a couple of the Star Wars movies and ate a lot. That’s about all there was.

    March 3, 2017 – Cotillion

Margo has been going to a formal dancing and manners course this year. She learned how to conduct herself at dinners and formal dances and met a bunch of very nice folks her age. Today was the last event where parents where allowed to watch and photograph.

    March 2, 2017 – Bulgogi

We all met at our favorite Korean BBQ restaurant after school today, which has long become a staple for us. The staff knows us so well by now that we don’t even have to order.

    February 27, 2017 – Frankfurt

So, this is a repeat from a few years back when I had the Monochrom with me at the Frankfurt airport. It was interesting in that I have taken to some of the same images as before and also to see the difference color makes.

    February 26, 2017 – Bonn

I visited Malte and Charlotte today for a very unique Karneval experience in Bruehl close to Bonn. It was really good to see everyone again and certainly fun to meet some very nice new folks as well.

    February 25, 2017 – Dusseldorf

Nils and I took a long walk through Dusseldorf, which was really nice. Most of all, it was great just to catch up since we hadn’t had a chance to see each other for too long by now.We took a bunch of street shots, then ran into a large group of folks celebrating carnival and ended up at the Meilenwerk, a storage and retail space for vintage automobiles.

    February 20, 2017 – A Couple of Shots

We’ve been making photos throughout the last two weeks, but it kind of flowed at its own pace. Most were shot on random days, some on Valentine’s and others last night.

    February 5, 2017 – Pizza

Since I got a new steel plate for the pizza oven for my birthday, we figured we better give it a try. Now, making pizza is usually an all-day affair as we start with the dough and source and then prepare the individual toppings. We made four tonight and they turned out to be by far the best we have ever managed. The steel plate really does wonders in the 500 degree heat of our pizza oven.

    February 2, 2017 – Birthday

It is so nice that I didn’t have to travel so far this year and we promptly used the opportunity celebrate my birthday today.  I was extremely touched by the nice gifts and the fact that Arno and Margo both really put a lot of thought into what I like.

January 29, 2017 – Day in the Park

It was absolutely gorgeous today, which prompted Margo and me to go out and explore a little. We took the train through downtown and rummaged around the park, added a few stops for coffee and ice cream and then went shopping to bring it all to a close.

    January 28, 2017 – Hanging Out

We all met at Fernando’sfor lunchafter my class and Arno’s German school, went horseback riding and then had a very quiet evening with little to do but studies and playing around.

    January 26, 2017 – Bubble Wrap

We found a package with new dinnerware at our front door this afternoon and soon enough the packaging materials morphed into a set of highly creative costumes. Naturally, it turned into a fun dance and superhero show pretty quickly.

    January 22, 2017 – At the DMA

While Margo [played her basketball game, we drove down to the museum for lunch. Naturally, we ended up drawing and crafting while we did not eat much. Needless to say, the exhibitions were more interesting than food as well. In the end, we ended up at the Pharmacy on our drive back to the house.

In the evening we were finally ready to try out all of Margo’s new dresses to determine which ones she’s going to keep …

    January 21, 2017 – This Week

We had an eventful week in which we saw the offices behind the house being torn down to make room for new homes. We had burgers at Chips, ice cream at Paciugo’s, went to our favorite bookstore, rode the skateboard in the living room and made slime from glue and detergent.

And here are a couple of B&W shots …

    January 14, 2017 – Charlotte’s Web

Over lunch, we secured supplies to make a traditional Texas chili with chuck beef and lots of home-made chili paste. We then went to see Charlotte’s web at the Eiseman Center in Richardson. Arno and Margo have both read the book and knew the story well, however, it was still a lot of fun to watch the actors, who each had two roles in the play. Afterwards, we got in line to obtain an autograph on our programs while Arno told Templeton (the rat) that he liked him best. When we came home, we found that Meredith had bought a couple of dresses that Margo can wear for her Cotillion group which introduces fifth graders to etiquette, formal dancing and table manners.

    January 7, 2017 – Basketball

This winter, Margo started to play basketball, which is something her Mom had also done as a child. She enjoys it very much and we wish we could provode her with more opportunities to practice so that she can build her skills quickly and efficiently. Unfortunately, she’s bound to the practices at the school and thus needs to be more patient. In any case, she is very good already and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her game today.

    January 2, 2017 – The New Year

So, we did not go to the fountain in downtown as we had done in previous years. Instead, we spent the morning watching a brilliant Sean Connery as Bond in Diamonds are Forever and then we took off to the park to soak in the sun. It was a georgous day with about 24 C and lots of light. Truly a Texas winter day.

    December 29, 2016 – The Museums

Margo, Arno and I took the day off to go to the museums in Fort Worth. We had planned ahead, ompleted our work for the day long before and had all brought cameras to capture decisive moments. The exhibitions were excellent at both, the Modern and the Kimbell, although we found out that our membership in both had lapsed. In any case, we took in the art, photographed as much as possible and then headed back to Dallas where we had a milkshake at the Pharmacy.

    December 25, 2016 – Christmas, Finally

The big day is finally here. Neither Margo nor Arno had an easy time getting into bed last night as they were both very excited. We had a grand time opening presents of course and everyone did really well in chosing them for the others. I think Arno was most excited about getting a drone and he immediately assembled it so he could take it for a first run. Unfortunately, we did not read the manual all the way to the end before giving it a shot and thus we had to fish the drone out of the swimming pool after a few seconds of its maiden voyage. Margo was really excited about getting a whiteboard (that was her no. 1 wish) and we shall now expect regular briefings on family matters in her room, complete with charts and thorough analysis. As we had hoped, Meredith was very touched by our images and loved her bracelettes as well. As for me, I got a five volume tome on baking bread among many other great gifts and could not be happier!

    December 24 and a half, 2016 – Meredith’s Present

This year we decided to give Meredith a really cool and unique gift. We set up studio lights in the living room and shot serveral sessions with two professional film cameras. Arno and Margo basically made letters with their hands. Arno spelled out the sentence “I Love You” while Margo spelled “You Are The Best” for Meredith. Then we brought the films to a high-quality lab and scanned the rolls so that we could print them on very nice paper that we found in New York. Last, we had to fit them into frames, which involved destroying lots of cheap Picasso drawings, getting mats cut to exactly the right size, finding foam to lift the images and glueing everything together using a highly toxic spray that required all three of us to run around with masks for hours. On top of all that, we had to keep her completely in the dark (see below) as to what we were doing. However, most challenging of all, we didn’t really know whether we would pull it all off until we were finally done. We can’t wait to see her face tomorrow!

First up is Arno with his visual declaration of love.

Next up is Margo, who rally also wanted to say “I love you”, with her longer sentence that didn’t entirely fit in below, so we omitted an “S” and a “T” below.

The last frame shows the models letting loose after a long shoot and a bit of the setup.

    December 24, 2016 – Weihnachten

As is custom in our house, we celebrated Weihnachten today by opening the presents from my Mom. We talked to her on the phone of course and were happy to hear that all of our presents had also safely arrived. Margo got a drawing set and Egyptian hieroglyph stencil while Arno was very excited about his new Lego books. Meredith got a very nice custom-made necklace from Germany and I got an Edward Weston book, which still has me excited. Obviously, we cooked a lot as well.

    December 18, 2016 – Daddy – Daughter Day

Margo took me to her favorite restaurant for lunch and then treated me to a new exhibit on medival art at the DMA. Perfect day!

    December 17, 2016 – Horseback Riding

Arno went to his last riding lesson for the year. Of course, we forgot to bring the Christmas present for his teacher and also nelected to bring his riding boots. However, neither made a difference in the end. Arno did very well and even got up for the trott.

    December 16, 2016 – Arno’s Play

Arno performed in a Christmas play at his school today after being promoted to the “Joseph” role at the last minute. H did extremely well and was called out for being the happiest Joseph they have ever had. It was obviously great fun to watch.

Tonight we also had a JHG lecture by the German military chaplain for North America on the deployment of German troops into Mali and the collaboration between people of Muslim and Christian faiths.

    December 11, 2016 – Hanging Out

The weekend started out real busy with my last course session at the University, a long lunch and great fondue with friends in the evening. So we took it as easy as possible today with a bit of reading., catching up on work (for my part) and studying a whole lot as well.

    December 4, 2016 – Flash

I use an off-camera flash occasionally and always love the effect. Unfortunately, it’s quite blinding and no one in this family really enjoys it as much as I do. The times where I can et away with it are thus limited.

    November 26, 2016 – Downtown

I had a lunch meeting downtown and went for a quick stroll through the DMA and park. Maybe most exciting, we received a new tea maker today that I had purchased through Kickstarter about a year ago. Naturally, Margo, Arno and I had to give it a try by manufacturing our first cup of good, old-fashioned peppermint. It was delicious!

    November 25, 2016 – Marie and Markus

We had a nice evening at the Hentschel’s house over Raclette and a few glasses of white wine. The kids playednicelytogether and Arno found a toy Walter PPK, which made his night.

    November 24, 2016 – Thanksgiving

The Hamiltons, who have a kid in Arno’s and Margo’s class invited us over for a truly American Thanksgiving today. The food was absolutely delicious and we had a ton of fun. There were quite a few kids running around as well.

    November 23, 2016 – Milk Shakes

We have a bit of a food scheme going on here, so I’ll continue with what we consume on a daily basis. You are what you eat after all. Today was really nice in that we delivered Thanksgiving meals to three families with foster children after work and then made our very first  milk shakes at home. It’s really simple: just throw whole milk, sugar and a bunch of chemicals in a bowl and mix them up real well. Then you grind frozen, dried raspberries into a fine powder and voila, you have a fantastic shake.

    November 19, 2016 – Schintzel

Margo and I made french fries and schnitzel, which turned out really well. Of course we hammer the meat and add a solid helping of whip cream to the egg. By now, we’ve all gotten pretty good at it.

    November 16, 2016 – New York

A quick trip into the city today.

    November 13, 2016 – Eating

Today we actually managed to do nothing except cook and eat and watch a Bond movie. It was great fun and we all enjoyed the day tremendously. It was also an opportunity to make Arno’s bacon again, which is a savory, bacony, sweet strip of meat coated in caramelized sugar and pepper. For dinner we made a fantastic New York strip steak with slim french fries, which turned out really well.

    November 12, 2016 – SMU Dressage Competition

Arno and I went to his horse ring to take a look at a University team competition. It was very nice to see the different riders and Arno got inspired for his own lessons on “Max”, who wasn’t used in the competition to our disappointment.

This evening, we had a really great lecture at JHG by Thomas Adam on the history of charitable giving and philantrophy. It was the most lively talk we have had so far in the organization and truly fascinating to hear how different cultures and religions have influenced each other over the past millennium in their approach to giving to the poor.

    November 10, 2016 – School Night

I picked up Arno and Margo from school today so that we could have dinner at Little Greek, which wasn’t an unopposed decision, but certainly a sensible response to the conflicts that rage when we all try to find a consensus solution. Afterwards it was all homework and studying.

    November 6, 2016 – Lazy Sunday

Cooking was pretty much all we did today. Regitze visited for lunch, which was a nice opportunity for me to prepare a three-course meal with braised short ribs as the main event. Otherwise we worked some and watched another of Arno’s James Bond movies.

    November 3, 2016 – Trick or Treat

Margo’s volleyball team made it to the payoffs this year and that got everyone really excited. The girls fought very hard and  they had a lot of fun as well. Unfortunately, this was their last game of the season as they were eliminated in the quarter finals.

    October 31, 2016 – Trick or Treat

We visited Jake, Asha and Ashley today for a joint run at Halloween candy. It was a lot of fun to walk with the kids as they raced from house to house collecting a ton of sweets along the way. Ashley and Margo were both in surgical gear while Arno was “Bond, James Bond”, which earned him the new nickname “Shaken, But Not Stirred” in the family.

    October 29, 2016 – Bonn

I visited with Malte and Charlotte once more before going back home, which was very nice. We had a lot of fun and great food, as always!

    October 26, 2016 – Portraits

Today was better in that I had made a couple of portraits arranged in a 3-by-3 pattern.

    October 25, 2016 – Artsy Stuff

I have to admit that I hate semi-artistic trickery and the images here fall into that category of grabbing an effect through a combination of color and B&W. So, the aim was entirely to make it the least annoying.

    October 24, 2016 – Staircases

First day of a workshop on composition and all it does is rain. We stayed inside and took images of architectural elements such as a couple of really nice staircases at the Leica factory.

    October 22, 2016 – German Markets

Markets have been an integral part of Germany and all of Europe for that matter for well over two millennia. The nice thing is that you can buy anything from sheep skins to veggies straight from the producer.

    October 16, 2016 – Arno’s Birthday Party

Arno really wanted to celebrate his birthday at Adventure Landing in Plano and thus we went. There were a ton of games as everyone was running around while screaming loudly. It was fun to watch them in a game of laser tag where everything was pretty much pith dark and you could only see a few pillars. I think we were all relieved when it was over and we had a very quiet dinner.

    October 15, 2016 – Playing Around

Just a few snaps from today …

    October 10, 2016 – Arno’s Birthday

Everybody got up at six this morning for a nice breakfast followed by the opening of presents and a call to my Mom who gave Arno a James Bond DVD set. We furnished a PS3 for the occasion, which is pretty exciting for all of us. Naturally Margo was the only one who knew how to play. Anyway, now that Arno is able to tell people that he is eight, things look just a tiny bit more mature and seasoned.

Given that Arno and Margo had the day off from school we hit the Texas State Fair, which is a big deal around here. Consequently, it was pretty crowded and totally overpriced. We pretty much ended up spending our money on a ton of greasy food and a Farris wheel ride. We had a lot of fun though and Arno actually went on a very daunting ride all by himself!

    October 9, 2016 – Games and Stuff

We did not set a foot in front of the door today as we pretty much stayed holed-up inside all day. Arno was getting exited since his birthday is tomorrow and he can’t wait to tell people that he is eight. We had a bit of fun by telling him that the three of us just drew pictures for presents in an effort to simplify our lives. Obviously, he didn’t take long to catch on.

    October 8, 2016 – At the DMA

Margo I went for lunch at Villa O and then headed downtown to catch a bit of culture. Since she is currently learning about Egypt in school, we figured we’ll take advantage of the Members-only preview of a Egyptian artifact (mainly cats) exhibit at the DMA and take a stroll in the park as well.

    October 7, 2016 – Dinner at Houston’s

Lazy evening! Nobody (me) felt like cooking and thus we ended up at Houston’s well before most people would even consider the intake of food. We had lots of fun though as the images show.

    October 1, 2016 – Chess

Arno and Margo both play a mean game of chess, which makes it increasingly harder to beat them. I can still keep the upper hand with trickery and a bit of experience, but the day of my demise will inevitably approach.

In the evening we had a lecture by JHG Texas in which Hank Fink gave a talk on the history of settlements in Texas as well as its origins in Germany through the “Mainzer Adelsverein”. Hank’s talk was very well received and truly enlightening.

    September 30, 2016 – Downtown

Time to take the old Pentax 6×7 out once more for some street images.

    September 24, 2016 – Internet and Things

We had a really nice and lazy afternoon as we cooked a steak dinner for friends over a couple of hours. Everyone congregated in the kitchen and we soon watched a couple of really funny video blogs about flying first class on Emirates, among other things.

    September 18, 2016 – Sunday Lunch

After heated debates about where to take our lunch, we finally all settled on a middle-of-the-road candidate: the Little Mermaid Bar at Neiman’s. The food was good as always and lots of people complimented Arno on his stylish outfit.

    September 17, 2016 – Portraits

These were taken at different points over the last two weeks.

    September 11, 2016 – Lunch with Margo

We decided to head towards downtown today for the DMA and a stroll through the park. On our way back, we saw this awesome 70s police cruiser in  black, which was in unrestored condition.

    September 5, 2016 – Clouds

Another outing with the new medium format camera. This time I tried to get a few big sky type images given that the clouds were beautiful and everything looked great in the sunlight.

    September 3, 2016 – Black & White Experiments

In an effort to increase image quality, I started to shoot with an old medium format film camera. It’s actually the second one since I got duped by a seller in Japan on the first one. Anyway, here are some more images. The results are better than the first batch a few weeks ago with a broken camera, but there is still much left to be desired. Since the negative is four times larger that 35 mm it is extremely unforgiving in terms of their exposure, which is all done manually. You can pretty much tell which ones were shot correctly and which ones were not.

    September 1, 2016 – Fathers Day Mass

Since fathers day falls into the summer break at school, they celebrate it with a mass after the beginning of the new semester. It was a lot of fun to see Arno and Margo with all of their friends and teachers. Both made beautiful gifts for me as well!

    August 31, 2016 – Werner Herzog

We were in for a real treat tonight at a lecture given by the GermandirectorWerner Herzog. He was every bit as funny, thoughtful and entertaining as his reputation has it. His talk was very inspiring as well and provided plenty of background on some of his most famous projects such as Fitzcaraldo, Bad Lieutenant or Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

    August 27, 2016 – Margo

Margo made her namesake pasta dish today and posed for some modelling shots. Needless to say, the food was delicious and we enjoyed the evening with a nice glass of wine.

    August 26, 2016 – Soccer

Arno had a soccer game today in Irving so we caught an early start, had a fabulous meal at Chick-Fil-A and then proceeded to the field. It was a good game, albeit a loss for the team, and great fun to watch.

    August 25, 2016 – Sorry

Arno got his new soccer uniform, which had to tried out immediately. We all went downstairs for a game of Sorry afterwards in which I, that much is tradition, lost heavily to two far superior players.

August 21, 2016 – Food Trucks and a Train Ride

Arno and I decided that we need to get out of the house and ended up in the park where we caught a couple of nice shots. We also took the train around uptown, which is always fun.

    August 19, 2016 – Bulgogi

Meredith and I went to pick up the kids from school today while it was raining cats and dogs. It was an interesting drive and we all got drenched just walking a few feet. We ignored these calamities to go for our favorite Korean restaurant.

    August 14, 2016 – Portraits

My main camera has been at the service center since June and so we started to take color images on film. The ones included here were all taken with a 1960’s Asahi Pentax, which was strictly a professional camera at the time. It is much harder to operate than today’s auto-everything cameras, but also a great way to learn how to make images the right way.  Some turned out well while others require substantial adjustments. I have just left everything the way it was and posted six of them below.

We also did a small series of face portraits that was initially intended two faces up close. However, as you can see below, I hardly had any volunteers to put their faces together and thus had to content with a couple of head shots instead.

    August 13, 2016 – Lobster Rolls

Carole and Eric came over for an afternoon of cooking, which was great fun. Eric had already made a phenomenal cold tomato soup as our first course so that we could focus on the lobster rolls, which require six individual recipes, and the desert where the kids greatly helped once again. The results were respectable throughout and we enjoyed a good glass of wine all along.

    August 11, 2016 – Swim and a Dinner

We had a very nice afternoon at home and in the pool …

    August 9 & 10, 2016 – Jersey

Having been in New Jersey once again I took a bunch of candid shots, but with a different aim altogether. This time, the objective was justtocompose decent pictures rather than shoot street-style. The idea was (and will continue to be) to see what makes an image interesting. There are a lot of written and unwritten rules and then also the rule to break the rules. It’s developing what works for you and then understanding the decisions you make in the process to become consecutively better at it.

    August 7, 2016 – A Swim

OK, we really didn’t do much of anything today. Margo made a perfect lunch for us by preparing her specialty, Spaghetti a la Margo, and we complemented the treat with two nice steaks. But other than that, we really just hung out at the pool. It was great though and we all got a bit of a tan after all.

    August 6, 2016 – An Ordinary Day

This weren’t particularly different from many other Saturdays. Hence the title. We had a nice lunch and took Arno to his equestrian lessons, played chess and then cooked together.

    July 31, 2016 – Oysters

We had a very nice weekend, talked a lot about how to learn new stuff and become smarter and experimented a little with food as well. Most notably, Margo played several excellent games of chess against me and Arno tried his first oysters – not one, but two – on Saturday night.

    July 29, 2016 – Fashion Statement

Arno has always been the most fashion-conscious in our family. He certainly has a great sense of style and picks his clothes with a surety that many adults probably lack. Here we see him in an outfit that he bought at the Galleries Lafayette and a new pair of double monks that we ordered this week.

    July 27, 2016 – New York

I met Nancy and John for dinner in Grand Central Terminal tonight and decided to start a little early since I have not had a chance to see the new Oculus transportation hubby Santiago Calatravain the World Trade Center. It is a surreal architecture, definitely very beautiful and no doubt extraordinary in every way. You can tell that it establishes a communication with everyone who wanders through; people are looking up and down, discussing the architecture, which is probably the best any architect can possibly hope for.

Afterwards I walked from the Southern tip of Manhattan to 42nd Street in midtown just taking a few shots here and there. It took over an hour of walking and was pretty hot, but well worth the trouble. The streets of New York are always full of interesting characters. Today was certainly no exception.

    July 24, 2016 – Anniversary

This weekend was our 11th anniversary. Meredith surprised me with a wine from each year we have spent together accompanied by a photo, which was really cool. We are now obviously looking forward to start the drinking process, which is going to take a while. Margo, Arno and I returned the favor by creating a book for Meredith in which we listed all the things we love about her along with an image. The weekend was otherwise rather quiet and we had plenty of time to make a couple of delicious pizzas. On Sunday Juergen and Marilyn took us to a phenomenal Singaporean restaurant for lunch, which prompted all of us to overindulge heavily.

    July 23, 2016 – Dandy

Arno had another horseback riding lesson today and obviously dressed for the occasion. He enjoys fine clothing and really loves to wear ties. We just let him put on what he likes and often he’ll come down dressed in the same way as you  see here.

    July 20, 2016 – Snapshots

I have been using my travel camera for the past month or so to take images on the street. However, this time I decided that I wanted to have 1000 images before selecting a few to post. The process very much became the same as for film in that I did not look at the images at all before processing them.

    July 16, 2016 – Break Dancing

I met Alex and Massimo for lunch today and went for a walk in the park beforehand where I ran into a group of break dancers just hanging out. However, they were truly phenomenal and it was exciting to watch them. These images only capture part of the excitement that they inflicted on everyone who was watching.

    July 10, 2016 – Home

Just a few shots at home while working and swimming.

    July 9, 2016 – Spaghetti a la Margo

Tonight we made one of our all-time staples, Spaghetti a la Carbonara. I had sold the naming rights for the dish some time ago and Margo emerged as the winner so that hence forth, the dish shall be called Spaghetti a la Margo. Margo made it tonight, which was probably the best we have ever had. The trick is to use a really warm bowl when mixing all ingredients together and she managed it perfectly.

    July 7, 2016 – Science

Margo and Meredith worked on a chemistry set that turned out to be a lot of fun. Meanwhile, I got a chance to experiment with my flash a little, which I typically do not use for analog images.

    July 4, 2016 – Long Swim

Today was a holiday and it’s still hot. We went for another very long swim and battled extensively with out water guns. In the evening we had a nice Mexican dinner and played games.

    July 3, 2016 – Quick Swim

It’s been hot for the past few weeks since we have returned from our vacation and today was no exception. As soon as you are outside, you want to jump in the pool just to cool down again.

    July 2, 2016 – Arno’s Riding Lesson

After Arno had tasted the excitement of horseback riding in Germany with Stefan a few weeks ago, he was eager to get back in the saddle as soon as possible. Today was his first lesson at a stale near the house where he learned a few more things such as his hand posture (think of holding two ice creams) and his stance before he jumps (hold the horses’ neck). It was really nice to watch him and see how much he enjoys the sport.

    June 26, 2016 – Magic Show

Margo performed a magic show this evening after spending the past week in a course on magic at her Greenhill summer camp. She was really good and we have no idea how her tricks worked.

    June 25, 2016 – Lunch with Margo

Margo and I went to R&D, her favorite place, for lunch and had a really nice afternoon just swimming in the pool and relaxing.

    June 24, 2016 – Theater Performance

Margo and Arno both performed in a play at summer camp today. Margo was the narrator for the show while Arno was James Bond, which he delivered with a distinct Sean Connery accent.

    June 19, 2016 – Fathers Day

Margo and Arno surprised me with dinner and desert today as their Fathers Day present whil Meredith gave me a Paul Klee book, which interests me a lot.

    June 15, 2016 – New York

I had to fly into town for a meeting today and walked for about an hour in midtown to take these images.

    June 12, 2016 – Theater

We spent our last day at home with my Mom and played lots of games. In the afternoon Margo and Arno staged a talent show with two theater plays and two self-composed songs. It was lots of fun and we are truly sorry that we have to leave so soon again.

    June 11, 2016 – Bonn

Today we visited Charlotte and Malte in Bonn, which was great fun as always. All of us miss having them around in Dallas where we often got together for dinners, grilling and a few cold ones. Annie, my god-daughter, has grown up a lot and has begun to talk by now. It’s really nice to see her develop with three older brothers against whom she seems to prevail just fine.

    June 10, 2016 – Horseback Riding

Stefan arranged for us to ride horses at a stable where he keeps his own (considerably large) horse. Arno and Margo both enjoyed the experience and the former had a blast galloping in the arena. Afterwards we went to a tournament where we had food and watched a jumping competition.

    June 9, 2016 – Duesseldorf

My Mom invited us to her favorite restaurant in Krefeld, which is always a treat. Arno sampled a bit of wine from Meredith, which gave him a to of creative sparks for how to handle his napkin. In the afternoon the girls wanted to pamper themselves and we thus went to Duesseldorf for a wash and haircut. Initially we were told that it will take two hours, yet after the first two, there was work for at least two more. Arno and I roamed the streets in Duesseldorf while we waited.

    June 8, 2016 – Cologne

The morning was nice and sometimes very animated at my Mom’s house. We went to Cologne for lunch and to meet Peter, a very good college friend, for a coffee. As we attempted to climb the steps of the Dom, we quickly found that the bell tower, a half-way point to the top, was enough for us.

    June 7, 2016 – Travel Day

We spent the morning in Paris, walking from the apartment to the l’Arc de Triomphe, and the afternoon on a train that took us to Germany. While everything worked out great, it was rather uneventful. I had the most fun on a bus to the Gare du Nord where I was able to snap a few candid shots.

    June 6, 2016 – Champs Elysees

This was our last full day in Paris and we decided to take an architectural tour along the most famous street in Europe, which turned out to be awesome. We came across the company through Malte, who is a high school friend of the owner. Maybe most important, it allowed us to see much more than just the storefronts and to learn about the history of specific buildings – all modern – and how they came about. We visited several stores as well to look at the interior architecture, which was highly interesting. Arno loved the showrooms of Citroen and Renault while Margo was blown away by Louis Vuitton and Guerlain. I am sure she will be back at some point to purchase her first perfume here someday.

June 5, 2016 – Quai Branly and Versailles

What a day! We saw absolutely incredible art at the Branly and were blown away by the breadth, depth and quality of the whole collection. Obviously, we knew that modernism was greatly influenced by Africantribalart and that many great20th centurypainters collected these sculptures and masks. Yet, to see them up close and to realize how immediately some of them have translated onto the canvasses of Picasso and others was a real treat. In the afternoon we took a bus to Versailles where, it seemed, all other tourists in Paris had already arrived. We went through the chateau with its incredible rooms, paintings and ceilings, but it felt a little superficial. Not just because we were often elbowed by more staunch travelers, but also because you do not really experience much of the chateau. Our visits to the palaces in Potsdam, for example, were much more engaging as they are still pretty much intact.

June 4, 2016 – Rodin and Sacre Coeur

The floods finally caught up with us as we had to abandon our original objective to visit the Quai d’Orsay today. Instead, we took a long walk towards the Rodin museum and stopped at the Invalides on our way. The former was a truly eye opening experience in terms of the sheer quantity of Rodin’s work, needless to say the enormous quality of it all. Most interesting, you can trace the evolution of several key pieces such as his Balzac or the Burghers of Calais though various stages, which easily brings Rodin’s genius to light. On our way to the Metro, we walked past the Italian embassy and then stumbled across a small Italian restaurant two doors down. Correctly reasoning that their food must be phenomenal, we proceeded with lunch. In the afternoon, we visited Montmartre, the Sacre Coeur and a small cemetery, albeit not the one that hosts Morrison, Berlioz, Heine and many other luminaries.

    June 3, 2016 – Pompidou and Picasso

To the chagrin of our children, we had atruly horribleday. One that could have been spent with iPads in a mellow corner of the apartment and instead was dominated by a force-feeding of art and culture, greatly amplified by highly sophisticated exhibits and curatorial excellence. Things got a little better when we found an installation where kids could take a portrait, which would then be displayed in the installation and also in seven cities around the world with identical setups. That was certainly enough of a boost to get us through a phenomenal Paul Klee exhibition! Based on our success, we stretched things a bit by visiting the Jewish Museum and then the magnificent Picasso Museum. The latter was sold short as everyone was just entirely shot by that time. We’ll just have to go back soon.

    June 2, 2016 – Louvre

After a good nights’ sleep, this was our first day in full consciousness. We had a solid breakfast, surrounded by workers and bohemians,in a Tabac around the corner and started out at the Louvre. Naturally, our first stop was the Mona Lisa, which was in a packed room that pretty much resembled a never-ending red carpet appearance – flashing lights, groupies and screaming fans – by DaVinci. I vividly remember when I first saw the painting the eighties and thought it was crowded back then because there were five people around me. Anyway, we ended up roaming around, buying tea and macarons, touring the opera and getting new clothes for Margo and Arno. All said, we walked more than seven miles and fell into bed just as tired as we had the night before.

    June 1, 2016 – Eiffel Tower

After a brief refresh at the apartment, we went on the Eiffel tower as it happens to be very close to our apartment. There were huge lines everywhere so we decided to walk up the stairs, which was’t an issue for Arno and Margo! Even with fairly cloudy skies, the view was magnificent though and we really enjoyed the experience.

    May 31, 2016 – Traveling to France

We  had a very early start, flew to Charlotte and then had pretty much the day to ourselves before continuing to Paris. We went to a Discovery Place in the morning, which turned out to be just the right kind of distraction for everybody. Once we arrived, we took a taxi into the city (railroads were, predictably so, on strike) and unpacked in the apartment.

    May 30, 2016 – Flash

Given that we have to get up a 2 am tomorrow morning to catch an early flight to Charlotte, we decided that it would be prudent to get up at 5 am today so that we’re all ready for a hours of sleep tonight. I woke everyone up with my camera and a flash, which certainly did the trick. However, it also works great outside and in broad daylight so I just kept shooting with it throughout the day.

    May 28, 2016 – A Wedding

We were invited to the wedding of the daughter of a very good friend, Roy Varghese, today, which was great fun. Both the ceremony and the dinner were fabulous. We met a few other friends and truly enjoyed the company and the day. The dinner was set in the State Hall of Texas, which is an incredible Art Deco building in Fair Park.

    May 24, 2016 – New York

I met Chris, a friend, for dinner in New York this evening and took the small point & shoot camera with me for a bit of fun. The walk took about an hour and a half, while covering about six miles of ground. Basically, I just never stopped walking at a sensible pace. The results were mixed as there were issues with autofocus and image exposure that should be anticipated for a small camera. However, in the end, only the image matters. Here are a few that turned out reasonably well.

    May 23, 2016 – More Newark

A few more candid shots from the last two weeks as I made my way from the hotel to the office. This time, I left everything as it was and did not play around with the RAW files much.

    May 22, 2016 – Margo’s Ballet Recital

Margo had her annual ballet recital with Park Cities Ballet today at SMU. As always she was incredibly beautiful, performed with immense grace and danced like a pro. We are incredibly proud of her!

    May 21, 2016 – Athletes and Shoppers

We went on another photo safari today and decided to go to the lake first. It can be challenging to shoot people moving a fairly fast with a very small aperture. However, for those shots where it worked out, it paid off nicely. Arno took a bunch of images that are posted under Young Talent. I am working with him to post to his own website, which will surely grow over the next few years. Our second stop was the Mall where I needed to run a few errands. We just sat down in one spot and waited for interesting things to happen.

    May 20, 2016 – Spaghetti and Meatballs

Arno and I cooked a new meatball recipe tonight, which turned out to be quite good. We already knew to soak a croissant in water instead of using traditional bread crumbs. But the real trick, which we found on a German site, was to throw a bit of sour cream into the mix. Everything turned out real fluffy that way.

    May 15, 2016 – Sushi

Our Sunday was, once again, determined by food. We brought home a bunch of sushi, but not before a brief quality inspection and a random sampling.

    May 14, 2016 – Museum and Market

Arno and I went on a photo safari again, this time to Fort Worth so that we could catch the major museums and grab lunch at the modern. We saw a terrific Frank Stella exhibition, Arno noticed that you can switch his name around to make him a girl and we took in the Kimbell just for good measure as well. Afterwards, we discovered a Hispanic market that was truly interesting. As we walked through there, we were pretty much the only people photographing. It actually became a bit dicey when we realized that some of the stuff had probably fallen of a truck before it ended up there and when a burly guy started following us, we gently retreated and drove off quickly.

    May 12, 2016 – People in Newark

A few weeks ago, I procured a small point and shoot camera that we had already tested at a dinner. The main intent was to have something when I am traveling and cannot carry my regular equipment with me for various reasons. So, I took it to the streets of Newark where you can hardly stop and ask someone for aportrait while you’re holding a camera in one hand and a briefcase in the other. These images are all shot subtly and candid. There was only one guy who asked me whether I got his image and we had a good laugh about it. It was a lot of fun to process them as well and took a bit of effort to bend the source files, which are nowhere near where my usual output. A few  may look a bit over the top and some might seem like they are HDR processed, which none of them were.

May 8, 2016 – Surgery, Pizza and an Assignment

It was mothers day and we started our cooking with a round of delicious pizzas. After learning about surgery in school from Jake and Asha, Margo is now fully on track to become a doctor. She threw on her scrubs to perform some light surgery on Arno, who took it with stride. In the afternoon we worked on an assignment about the state of Pennsylvania that Arno needs to turn in next week. His three heroes from the  state are William Penn, George C. Marshal and Bradley Cooper!

    May 7, 2016 – Margo’s Birthday Party

Margo invited a couple of good friends from her school to celebrate her birthday at a spa called Sweet & Sassy. They all got their nails done, makeup and a fancy haircut before going on the catwalk for a show. It was great fun to watch and Arno was a real trooper to stick around for the entire 2+ hours. Obviously, the girls were in heaven and we were just happy that they had so much fun.

    May 6, 2016 – This Week

It’s been a long time since I was home for an entire week. So, this time around we had lots of fun and excitement as we cooked and played in the evenings.

    May 2, 2016 – Margo’s Birthday

Our little girl turned ten today! I am still mesmerized how time flies. If the next ten years pass just as fast, it’ll be tomorrow when she get’s into her own car, moves out for college and brings home s succession of boyfriends. That’s not something her Dad wants to think about, actually. Anyway, moving on, we had a very nice morning.I made bacon and eggs for breakfast, we unwrapped a couple of presents including her first iPhone, and then everyone went off to School at 7 am.

In the evening, we all went to Half-Price Books where Margo and Arno both spend money that their Oma had given them for Margo’s birthday. The challenge was to find the books in a given period of time. Afterwards we made Spaghetti  Carbonara a la Margo and tried her new cotton-candy machine, which, I was told, makes excellent cotton-candy.

    May 1, 2016 – Lazy Sunday

We had a very relaxing day with no immediate tasks in the morning. I owed Arno a nice lunch and he picked Houston’s for it.

    April 30, 2016 – Museum and a Wine Tasting

Arno and I had some time today and were tasked with picking up two very nice frames at Conny & Royd’s shop, which were to be sold at the JHG wine tasting later than night. We saw that there was an Irving Penn exhibition at the DMA and made a straight line for it. It is one thing to see his images in a book and quite another to stand right in front of them. I will definitely go back sometime to see everything once more.

Tonight we had our annual wine tasting at JHG, which was a lot of fun again. This year, the theme was wines of royalty and covered the favorites of queens, kings and an elder statesman. My personal favorite was a Madeira that was drunk by the latter, Benjamin Franklin, in vast quantities.

    April 23, 2016 – Dinner with Friends

We had another dinner tonight, this time a real one, with Alex, Massimo and his sister. It was a lot of fun, we had way too much wine and lots of good conversation. Instead of me just taking photos, we also put a small P&S camera on the table so that everyone can grab it and take pictures, which worked out real well.

    April 22, 2016 – Dinner at Arno’s

Arno had a reading competition masked as a restaurant experience in school today. Basically, all students had a little table where parents could sit down and pick from a menu. The student would then read a section in a book corresponding to the chosen menu items. Due to working, I did not get a chance to see Arno read at the school and so we just recreated the situation at home in our living room. It was very funny and we’re really proud how well Arno can read already.

    April 17, 2016 – Culinary Adventure

It rained cats and dogs today, which ruled out any kind of outdoor activity. We took it easy and spent the afternoon cooking a French onion soup. To mix things up a bit, we procured all ingredients from a low-cost supermarket. The intention obviously was to prove that you can make great food as long as your process is right and your recipe is good. Well, I was wrong! The soup did not come together and even after four hours of labor, the result was rather miserable. The point is taken in that we’re going back to trusted sources and quality ingredients.

    April 16, 2016 – Dallas Aquarium

Today it was Arno’s turn to do something fun. We visited with Connie and then took a walk through the Aquarium. It was surprisingly crowded and we stood in long lines hardly moving at times, but seeing all of the different creatures was certainly worth the trouble. On our way home, Arno picked out a nice steak at the market and we proceeded to make steak et frites for dinner.

    April 15, 2016 – Dinner with Margo

Margo and I went for a nice dinner at R&D while Meredith took Arno to a flag football game. We dined lavishly on Spaghetti and vanilla ice cream and concluded the evening with a visit to the park.

    April 10, 2016 – People

On to Day Three. The weather was gorgeous and the light truly amazing. There are few places where you see as many interesting people as you do in New York. I had a very hard time not being noticed, which makes it clear that I have much to learn. Also, these images are often mere portraits as opposed to well-composed photographs. Maybe one or two are decent images, but then again, I really could not resist posting some of these characters anyway.

    April 9, 2016 – Umbrellas

Day Two in New York was overcast and mostly rainy. As the title says, there are lots of umbrellas in these images. I have gotten better at getting close andin front ofpeople. Yet, the biggest challenge continues to be finding compelling situations, seeing them emerge beforehand and moving aroundquickly to capture the shot. Obviously, that is what makes a good street image and will take quite some time. This weekend opened a few new doors none-the-less, which is fun and rewarding.

    April 8, 2016 – New York

This is the first of three days in Manhattan. I went out after lunch and again late at night to take a few shots. Contrary to past practice, I forced myself to linger in good spots for a long time, especially when the backgrounds or light were favorable, which led to better results in the end.

    April 3, 2016 – Art Fair

Meredith took Arno and Margo to two consecutive birthday parties, which freed me up to go out for a few hours. Since Deep Ellum had a art fair, the choice wasn’t hard. I started at the farmers market and then walked the art fair from every angle.

    March 27, 2016 – Easter

It’s Easter Sunday. We paid homage to the occasion by having an elaborate omelette and then unwrapping a few small gifts instead of a more traditional egg hunt. In the afternoon, we went to CLC for a service in German language, which was very nice.

    March 25, 2016 – Arno’s Game

Tonight was very valuable from a learning perspective as Arno’s football team encountered a much stronger opponent. They had more players, were much better organized and had better skills, but what can you do. You learn and you grow. It was fun to watch and everybody enjoyed the show.

    March 19, 2016 – Photo Safari

It always amazes me to discover new sites in Dallas, which, of course, happens quite often. Today we went on a tour with our neighbor Quinn, who is a movie producer. He gave us a tour of his production studio in downtown, which was really cool and we had fun shooting a few images with studio lighting and backgrounds.

Once we had checked out a couple of really cool locations that Quinn recommended, we made our way North and ended up shooting people at a St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which was a perfect setting. Everyone was half-boozed and half-costumed, which provides for an interesting environment.

    March 14, 2016 – Flag Football

Arno started to practice with his flag football team today. He was much better than last season and actually better than pretty everyone except for one or two of the kids who had played with their Dads throughout the winter. This was  surprising as we had not done anything with him. In defense, he was the only player who caught all runners trying to get past and it was impressive to see that he just did not give up. I may need to go out with himsoonto practice throwing the ball, which is the only area where he needs improvement.

    March 13, 2016 – Goofing Around

Our weekend started out lazy and pretty much continued that way. Once I returned from my lecture, we played around while Margo and Arno showed off new clothes as well as fancy hats they had procured for our summer vacation this year. Trying to get Arno to grocery shopping with me turned into a drama, during which he alternated between having stomach aches, which healed completely in the sweets section of the market, and needing to lay down for a nap at three in the afternoon.

    March 11, 2016 – Salvation Army

At JHG Texas, we periodically visit the Salvation Army center in downtown to serve food to the homeless, recovering addicts and anyone else who may need to reestablish their life. It is always a very humbling and rewarding experience in which I can’t help but notice how unfair things can be and also how little it may take to destroy the basis of a normal life. Today we also gave a donation to the organization that will help victims of the tornado in Dallas over Christmas. We finished the evening with a BBQ dinner and excellent conversations.

    March 6, 2016 – Playground

Margo and I took the afternoon off to spend time together. We decided on an old staple, the Highland Park Pharmacy, where we had a milk shake and some snacks before heading over to a park. Working off our newly gained calories, we played a round of hide-and-seek, which proved to be difficult as there were no trees wide enough for me to hide behind. I guess it’s pretty clear who won.

    February  26, 2016 – Disaster Recovery Center

A few of the officers at JHG Texas visited a warehouse of the Salvation Army today and got a really interesting tour of the facility. The organization inventories non-perishable supplies such as beds, blankets and water here and houses disaster response vehicles as well. We learned a lot about how the organization responds to tornados, floods and hurricanes while we discussed how JHG Texas can better support their efforts in the future.

    February  21, 2016 – At Home

We just hung out at home today, Arno wore parts of his hockey gear, Margo a bathrobe and we played a bunch of games. That’s about all I have to report …

    February  15, 2016 – Fort Worth Zoo

Margo, Arno and I took the day off today to visit the zoo. The one in Fort Worth is really nice and a bit more interesting than ours. We had lots of fun riding  a train and merry go-round, saw lots of wild things and ended our tour with a juicy burger.

    February  14, 2016 – Valentimes

After a very nice steak dinner last night, we took things easy today. For most of the day, we made several very delicious pizzas. Of course, we also exchanged a few small gifts such as flowers, drawings and chocolates.

    February  7, 2016 – Mardi Gras

This is obviously a New Orleans custom that takes a much calmer form here in Texas. Mardi Gras is fairly new to this area and celebrated as a procession of show cars. For me, it was an interesting opportunity to shoot a few frames.

    February  6, 2016 – Birthday Dinner

We celebrated my birthday with a few good friends this evening enjoying lots of good conversation, food and wine. Obviously, the younger crowd had its fun as well while we all joked around.

    February  3, 2016 – University of Dallas

I had been invited to an exhibition opening on lithographs by Marc Chagall at the University of Dallas today. Given that I have taught MBA courses here for seven years, I brought the camera and took a few shots.

    February  2, 2016 – Birthday

I guess it was my turn to have a birthday. We all got up real early to have breakfast together and unwrap my presents, which were mainly kitchen utensils and two very nice signed postcards by Joseph Beuys. In the evening Meredith had to work and thus I picked up Margo and Arno for a dinner and game of soccer in the upstairs room afterwards.

    January  31, 2016 – In the Park

Today was sunny and quite warm so lots of people came out the park in downtown to relax and bask in the sun. For me it was a good opportunity to catch a few moments as I am trying to become better at street photography.

    January  24, 2016 – Breakfast

This was my first full weekend at home for the year and we approached things quite casually because of it: lots of playing and a bit of horsing around. It’s good to be back!

    January  11, 2016 – Witten

I am on a very short visit to my Mom to help out a little, cook some and run errands where necessary. Today we went to her family cemetery in Witten and walked past the house she grew up in in the 1930s. It was very interesting and all-around fun.

    January  2, 2016 – A Thousand Shots

This was a new assignment in my photo workshop. The idea is very simple: take 1,000 images on a given day. You don’t really compose them, but let the camera lead you. It is pretty amazing that you will get some good results by sheer statistical luck. However, there is a more Zen approach to this as well in that you quickly learn to follow your instincts. The biggest issue for me was that without autofocus or any other modern trapping on my camera, a lot of the shots were less than sharp, yet they are still very good images.
